CT or MRI to exclude spread-which is best?

Does anyone know which is the preferred method of scan to rule out spread? CT scan will cause exposure to radiation, but does it give better results? Or is it because it is possibly cheaper than MRI?

And, why is contrast used? Would appreciate any advice XXX

Ct with contrast will see if there is any spread to soft tissue. MRI is usually directed at particular areas. I have had 3 breast MRI to see how the tumour is responding.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for your advice.

I have to see the breast team tomorrow for me to ask them about this as due to have CT scan of neck, chest and abdo with contrast and worried about the dose of radiation. Wondered if I can have an MRI instead? I know it costs more but wanted to make sure this wasn’t the only reason for doing a CT scan…

Does anybody know,ct scan with contrast- is the contrast bit the iodine they inject with the scan- or is the contrast bit something extra?does that make sense?not sure anymore!!!

The contrast is through an iv. It’s ok and very quick. It makes the images a lot sharper
