Hi everyone, I have started my chemo (TAC) and not feeling too bad with the first one thankfully. I have an apt for a bone scan the week after next and was wondering if anyone can give me any tips. I thought I read somewhere but can’t remeber where that you can ask for an alternative drink which tastes more pleasant!! am I imagining this???
is your bone scan with the nuclear medicine department? if so I dont think you need a drink for it, you have an isotope injection, maybe its different where you are?
they should send you some literature with your appointment letter, if not ask your bcnurse if she can get some info for you
if a drink is needed, then I’ve heard people on here have taken orange/blackcurrant juice to add to the drink, but I didnt mind the taste when I went for my CT i imagined a big glass of pernod
My bone scan consisted of going to the nuclear dept for an injection in the morning then going back 4 hrs later for the scan. It was the best one (if that’s possible) and I actually went to sleep. You must stay v. still and don’t bother asking the technican guy if he thinks it’s ok cos they can’t see anything.
There is a dexa scan as well, but not sure about that one - isn’t that to do with density?
Good luck x
I agree with the other ladies, nuclear injection, went away for 3 hours and then back for the scan. It was nothing to worry about, there was only a tiny bit that scared me when the machine comes down quite low to your face, but the radiographer explained that and it was literally a few seconds. I just closed my eyes and tried to sing a song in my head.
One thing though, try to drink at least 2 litres of fluid, preferably water. This is apparently to flush the nuclear stuff around and they get a better picture. This was the bit I found hard, everything else was fine.
I am such a nit wit I meant to have put CT scan not bone scan in initial post as I have had the bone scan which came back clear. so any advice about the liquid they give you for the CT scan would be taken on board. Thyanks for people offering advice about the bone scan though.
Hi again sharon, my CT scan was for pelvis, abdomen and chest, and I think the drink was just for the abdomen/digestive system?? anyways, the drink they gave me tasted a little like pernod, which I didnt really mind, but I’ve heard people say they took dilute drink with them to put in it??
Hi Sharon,
the Ct scan is fine. At our hospital you have to drink a jug full of water. If you say 'I’m on chemo I don’t think I can drink anything horrible, they will give you one in water - there is no taste to it. Bev didn’t say anything and had a big thick one like indigestion medicine!! She couldn’t believe it when I got water, as she came on that one with me. Then you go in and have a tiny needle put in your inner elbow, which they were brilliant at doing. Then the bed goes in and out a rainbow shaped hoop a few times. Then she/he comes back and puts something in the needle in your arm, which you can’t feel and the bed goes in and out a couple more times with your arm up in the air like you are the drip stand. LOL. It is quick apart from sitting drinking the stuff and not unpleasant as things go.
See you tomorrow
Lily x
