CT scan

going tomorrow for a CT with contrast Can anyone tell me what it is like? I’ve read a few websites, but it would be nice to hear from others. How long will it take?

Thanks

Hi I had a CT scan no problem at all. Had to attend hospital and drink around 3 quarters of a liter of tap water before scan (they watch and measure you drinnk it) then they put a caputula in your arm with the contrast. you lie on a flat table and a donut shaped machine goes over you once quite slowely - not too close and not enclosed (without contrast) then they do it again put the contract in your body - you feel it going round its cold and when it gets to your bottom/bladder you get a ‘wee’ sensation but not strong but makes you think you want to go.

the whole two scans take approx 10 mins. They gave me a cup of tea afterwards and asked me to wait in case of any alergic reaction - thats because I had an alergic reaction to the dye they put into me when I had my SNB. But no reaction so went home.

They said the results would be available straightaway on the computer. I got them from my consultant (all clear) about 1 week later when I had my appt. My BCN did say she would phone me with the results as I was anxious about them but she didn’t and that was becase whilst they were clear there was something else they found - and wanted to discuss this to me face to face and to be honest that was probably the right decision. No big probs though just some swollen nodes that were suspect but turned out ok.

hope that helps.

Hi, I have regular ct scans as I have secondaries. I go to either of two places and they each have different routines. There is a lot of hanging around as you do have to drink a cup of fluid every 10 minutes for an hour before the scan (some places this is flavoured with squash, others it just plain water, depends on the age of the scanning equipment). Sometimes the canula is inserted just before you go in, other times it can be done whilst you are inthe process of drinking the water, I think it depends how busy they are. Also some places will take the canula out immediately after the scan, whilst others will wait until 45 minutes after the scan before removing it. There is a lot of hanging around so make sure you have enough cash for parking and that you take a good book or something to occupy the time.

Best of luck,

thanks for your comments. It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Now I just need to wait for the results. :frowning:

Angellica,

I sometimes think the wait between scan and getting the results is the hardest part.

Hoping for good results for you.
