Hey… I’m scheduled to start chemotherapy in a couple of weeks. Has anyone had experience of using the Daniel Field products please? ![]()
I didn’t use it so have no personal experience. However I did hear from a couple of people on my chemo thread that they made no difference and were expensive. I chose a gentle clean (no nasties cruelty free) shampoo, never used heat and tried to wash my hair no more than twice or twice a week.
I also chose an expensive clean conditioner for the cold capping in the clinic - not the one they use in hospital which is the usually a cheap full of yuck version. It was a little treat for me as the cold capping can be difficult. I managed 12 pax and 4 ACs so 16 cold capping. By the end I wanted to rip it off but kept going. Kept all of my hair in paclitaxel but lost about 60% on AC which was tough. However it meant I never had to wear a wig and usually just a hat.
I’m now two years on and have thick hair. Most of the grey that came through has gone as have the curls (even with cold capping they came)
Nothing apart from cold capping will stop you losing hair so I would spoil your self on using normal clean products so you feel special rather than a patient
Good luck x
PS I no longer use the same products - bring back too many memories ![]()
Hi My advise to you is just to use your own normal shampoo/or better still conditioner, that way there is no fear of any unpleasant reactions, or side effects.
Plus when it comes to deodorant Sanex is recommended for under the arm, irrespective of whether the hair grows back or not. Mine never grew back but i retained 50% of my own hair. Best to discover what is your normal shedding in the hair brush before you start, and going into winter, stick with the cold cap, it so works. Don’t be tempted to shave any off, the first 5- 10 mins are the worst simple because you are adjusting to the cold. Take one para 1 hour before also helps. I’m now 4 years the other side.
Ask me more if you wish, and check back at the September starters as i’ve submitted tips and answers to them. Love and light Moonsox x.
From what I have read in the thread, it’s expensive for what it is and this charity research many shampoos and treatments that cost much less.

They also work with https://lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk/ to provide help with hair care during chemo. You can book online sessions and some in person such as skin and makeup. I highly recommend them.
Most U.K. hospitals use Paxman and they offer lots of help https://coldcap.com/
I had 12 weekly Paclitaxel and kept most of my hair, I thinned and had two small patches above my ears. I lost all body hair, most has grown back very patchy. My hair has come back darker and curlier than before even with the cold cap. I did have my bob cut to a pixie cut as I read a lot of hair can impact the effectiveness of the cold cap system. I had a lot of hair and wanted to make sure I gave it the best chance.
Good luck with your treatment.

Thank you jbb for your response and helpful comments. I’ve got a Paxman treatment conditioner I may use instead ![]()
Thank you fur your response and helpful comments and links. I think I’ll stick with the natural recommended products most people are talking about ![]()
I used them and kept 60% of my hair
Their kit came with this sort of jelly plastic fillet which was used to place over Crown of the inside cap. It put a very slight pressure allowing the inner cap to settle To the scalp a bit more
i used their pre/post treatment solution as well
not sure if it works for sure but for me it did
Good luck
Hi!
I am using it, but I only had one cycle of EC so far 17 days ago. I didn’t buy their shampoo and conditioner because I am very happy to use Moo Goo sensitive scalp ones. I ordered it after reading that last summer the Sheffield uni was researching hair preservation during chemo combining cold cap with antioxidant topical application and Daniel Field’s system seems to involve antioxidants. Here’s the link from a BBC article 'Double weapon' found in chemotherapy hair loss laboratory research - BBC News
So these are my impressions so far:
The boosters 1&2 smell of menthol, it was not a pleasant smell after the chemo, I didn’t manage to wash my hair after returning home because I started feeling really sick, so I couldn’t wash it off until the following day. Couldn’t bear the scent by then! Then for 2 days you have to dilute the powder booster and use it as a rinse which was not a problem. After that and until the next cycle you apply the water based spray which is fine. I didn’t get the “chicken fillet” thing which would have been really useful for me because the health assistant who put the cold cap on my head did not tighten it properly, she was not very experienced, I think. I started shedding yesterday after washing my hair, but it hasn’t been too bad so far, initially lots of separate hairs fell out 2 hours after the wash, I was absolutely petrified but this morning there was none in the silk cap I wear overnight and when I combed, about 30 to 40 fell out, which is not horrendous and they were not tangled. I have very fine hair which sheds normally anyway, it doesn’t grow very long but grows back quickly, so I can manage this unless it escalates.
I don’t know if Daniel Field’s system works, it’s still early days, but I will keep using it since I have already spent money on it and I would do anything to make the cold cap work, next time I would be a lot more assertive about the cap fit.
I also ordered the brow and lash serum, it’s very watery and I apply it with my finger twice a day. I think my lashes have been growing on it, but will they stay when I switch to Docetaxel after EC, I don’t know. I might be clutching at the straws here, but I could afford this as a one off, so I will update how it progresses.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Hugs from me xxx
Hi… thank you for your reply. I’m starting EC next week for 3 cycles then Docetaxel for 3 cycles. I had an online consultation with Daniel Fields and she said that they’ll replace the menthol one free of charge with a non scented one if I don’t like it - you should email them and do the same.
I haven’t ordered the products yet however if I don’t I suppose I’ll never know if they would’ve worked or not. There’s mixed reviews but I’ll do anything to save what I can of my hair.
Do you know anyone else who has used the products. The article you sent me was interesting. I’m in Sheffield and if they were doing a clinical trial I’d be keen to be involved.
BW, Sue
Hi Sue,
We will be finishing at the same time, I have 2 more EC cycles and then 4 Docetaxel ones every 3 weeks. It will be interesting to compare how it works for us.
Unfortunately I don’t know anyone else who used it personally, I literally ordered it at the last minute after finding that article. But I have bought hair colouring from them before and it was good and very gentle so I know that they are a good company and not scammers. Like you, I would do anything to keep as much hair as possible and I have babied it like you won’t believe!
I remember Dawn from DF mentioned swapping the scented conditioner with unscented, I will give it another try next week and if I really can’t stand it straight away, I will email her.
Before you start chemo, I have a couple of tips, you may now them already, but just in case:
Wash your hair in tepid water. To do that comfortably, don’t do it in the shower, unless you enjoy cold showers of course, I do it using a shower hose over the bath. If you don’t have a hose, get a bucket of water and a plastic jug and do it by hand.
Get a silk cap to wear in bed and in the house, it literally stops shedding during the night time, I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me but it’s true.
Do make sure the cold cap touches the top of your head during the chemo, otherwise it will fall out more in the place where it doesn’t touch your head. I am really disappointed with myself for not being more assertive. Some people say cold capping is very painful, it wasn’t in my experience but maybe because it wasn’t tight enough, have a couple of paracetamols before, I didn’t feel like it was really cold, it felt like a cool spring day.
I hope it goes well for you next week
, you won’t notice any changes to your hair for a couple of weeks if you are like me. Hope you don’t get many side effects and if you do and they are bad, contact your onco nurse or the helpline number they give you.
Best of luck,
Ella xx
