Hi, my daughter recently had an appointment following changes in appearance and breast pain - she had an ultrasound which identified changes graded 5 and mammogram which identified changes graded 4 followed by a biopsy. We now have an appointment scheduled for next week but I’m still not sure whether they are saying she has breast cancer or if I’m in denial. Been told the appointment next week will be to discuss treatment and plan so should I assume cancer confirmed?

Hi @elsie.thompson unfortunately none of us on the forum are qualified to answer your question. Each of us is a “punter” and all of our stories are individual. For example, I was casually told by the radiologist at the biopsy that my lump was cancer but the tests would determine what type, so the wait wasn’t so anxious as I already knew. The next appointment was indeed to be told the type (invasive ductal carcinoma plus low level DCIS, er+ 8/8, pr+ 6/8, HER2-) and what the treatment plan would be (lumpectomy, radiotherapy and endocrine therapy for 5 years). At that point you really do feel as if things are moving forward and that you are in the hands of experts. For me that was four years ago and I don’t think about it much, in fact my surgery was on 13th September 2022 and I have only just realised that that day passed earlier this week without me realising.
The majority of tests turn out that the abnormality is benign but if it turns out to be breast cancer then the anxiety of not knowing will be replaced with a sense of control, of positivity around the treatment plan. The vast majority of us who go through it go on to live cancer-free lives but the only way out is through IF that’s what it turns out to be. I am sure it must be worse to see your child going through this than going through it yourself, therefore I recommend calling the nurses here on 0808 800 6000 and talk about support for you that they may be able to offer through programmes such as Someone Like Me. In the meantime, good luck for the results appointment.

I’ve read lots of times here of biopsies they genuinely thought was cancer and it came back benign. Until they get those results no one can tell you 100%
I am sorry you and your daughter have this worry but try not to dwell on too many negatives yet. Have a great week, treat yourself and keep distracted. Worrying wont change a thing. Even if you get bad news, she is already be on the right path to getting fixed up

@elsie.thompson hello there ! im so sorry, that you and your daughter have to go through all this uncertainty, fear and worry !! but i hope, that both of you will be stronger together to fight whatever will be ahead of you !!!
the reason why i reach out to you is, our daughter got diagnosed with breastcancer age 28, in april '25. it has been a insane and very scary time. she also was diagnosed with BRCA1 , which i have myself been diagnosed with too. i just wanted to say, that if you would like to talk, or ask anything, then please do reach out… if i can help a little as a mother in a simmilar situation, than that would be wonderful…
i wish you both all the strength you can find and keep up the hope- and DAMN FIGHT !!!
