DCIS 2nd time

I was diagnosed with DCIS in my left breast in August 2020. High grade 15mm removed by lumpectomy and had 15 sessions of radiotherapy. May 2024 again diagnosed with DCIS in right breast, told this was 6mm however following lumpectomy it was 14mm high grade, due to start radiotherapy soon. My questions haven’t really been answered by my hospital team. My worry is about chances of further cancers being diagnosed? And whether there are any type of testing I can have for this?

Hi. I would ring the Breast Cancer Now nurses and ask them your questions. I am sure they will be able to help you. When you get a cancer in your other breast it is a new primary cancer. It is supposed to be uncommon to get a new primary in your other breast.

Hello lw19681,

Thanks for posting,

It’s understandable that you have questions following your diagnosis of DCIS in your left breast in 2020 and then in your right breast earlier this year.

Although this can feel worrying, it’s not uncommon for the overall size of the area and sometimes grade to be different from the mammogram size and biopsy grade when the tissue is looked at under the microscope.

It sounds as though @charlottebee had local recurrence in the same breast. As @BiRo says when you develop DCIS in a different breast, this is considered a new primary. Following a breast cancer diagnosis there is a slightly increased risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast.

It’s natural to worry about the risk of other cancers and to wonder whether you should have any other testing. You will continue to have annual follow-up mammograms for at least 5 years.

Some women are eligible for genetic testing to see if they are at increased risk of breast and other types of cancer. The decision about testing is based on NICE guidance and some women who have been diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer are eligible. Information about other members of the family who have had breast or other types of cancer is important in deciding whether you are eligible or not. You may find it helpful to discuss this further with your treatment team.
