DCIS and Mirena Coil?

Hi all

I have a dx of intermediate dcis (ER)+ and have a mirena coil fitted.  I discussed it’s removal with my nurse and breast surgeon but couldn’t get a definitive answer either way.

I was taking Estrogel, but have stopped but don’t know if I should arrange for my coil to be removed.

Does anyone have any guidance on this?

I immediately stopped taking the contraceptive pill and was told to avoid any estrogen products… I was also told not to use mirena coil but couple look into the copper coil instead.

I have both DCIS and HER2 Hormone positive IDC so I’m not sure whether that advice was for the DCIS or just the hormone positive tumour.

Maybe not hugely helpful either for you- sorry! But if it were me (I hate when people say that so sorry again!!) I’d remove it and look at the copper coil instead as it contains no estrogen x

Sorry, know you posted a few weeks ago but I’m interested in this question too. Are you postmenopausal? I had my SMX and DIEP last Sept for a large area of DCIS. Stopped my oestrogel too when diagnosed. My consultant advised removing my Mirena as my histology showed PR+ve DCIS. My mirena is 5 years “old”) but I’m on tamoxifen (which can cause thickening of the womb). Mirenas can protect against this (and obviously is a contraceptive, I’m 49 so still needed). My feeling is that a fairly “old” mirena will be giving lower amounts of progestogen. I know I’m unlikely to find someone who’ll fit me a new one, so enjoying period free contraception just a little while longer! Just wish there was more research into this…

Hi. I was diagnosed DCIS low grade and was advised to have my more a coil removed. Hope this information helps x
