Recently been diagnosed with 5cm DCIS. On Monday, I
I saw the surgeon and he offered me two choices either for mastectomy or lumpectomy with radiotherapy. He couldn’t say which was a better choice as they’re both good. I went with my gut feeling - lumpectomy wirh radiotherapy. I don’t know if I’ve made the right choice there? Then he said I could have a cancellation next Wednesday so it’s all flying quite quickly, although he said that there wasn’t a rush.
Any thoughts from people have had both options given to them or thoughts from one way or the other?
Hi
Sorry you find yourself here. I wasn’t given a choice but had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy for a smaller lump and am happy with that.
Probably the biggest consideration is how big is your bust now. A 16mm lump from my 38DD bust just leaves me a little lopsided when braless. If you go for the lumpectomy ask if they’re going to even you up a bit.
Practically recovery time should be quicker with a lumpectomy with no reconstructive surgery after and bra shopping won’t be an issue.
I hope all goes smoothly. Let us know how you get on.

Hi!
I went for the lumpectomy/ radiotherapy option as, like you, the surgeon said I could go either way. He did favour the lumpectomy route as it’s less invasive, and has found that women may regret rushing into a mastectomy when it is not clinically necessary. I had a type of partial reconstruction ( MICAP flap) at the same time. The radiotherapy ( 5 sessions) was not an issue- takes a few minutes and I had a slightly pink boob for a couple of weeks. I’m happy with that decision. My boob is a bit wonky but looks normal in a bra/bikini/ swimsuit etc!
Good luck with your upcoming treatments!
Thank you for your reply. Yes, he seemed to be slightly erring towards a lumpectomy.
Reassuring to read too.
