DCIS low grade , ER positive- alcohol

Hi
Have many of you with a dcis diagnosis and er positive have given up Alcohol or reduced intake?

I’ve had dcis low grade, no radiotherapy and no meds as I have a clot risk. I’m not overweight and a non smoker. I’m also not a heavy or even moderate drinker (unlike maybe in my 20s and 30s).
Thanks x

Hi I had DCIS 10yrs ago and just finished treatment for TNBC, while I didnt have any booze during treatment, I am alowing myself a tipple now and then, I’m not a big drinker anyway.

Hi @tuttifrutti

I decided to stop drinking a week before my mastecomy and while having chemo and radiotherapy.

I had my first drink about 2 months after all the hospital stuff finished. My capacity was even lower than before I stopped. I used to be able to drink men under the table and drink every weekend from Friday night to Sunday night but over the years losing weight and giving up smoking reduced my capacity but I still liked a drink on Saturdays.

Now I can easily go a few weeks or more without drinking. I might have 0% stuff on a Friday night at home as it’s more widely available these days and often start a big night out on 0% before switching to alcoholic drinks. At home a bottle of wine lasts me 2 weekends - a glass on a Friday and Saturday night then a glass the next weekend or even the weekend after. I am just not bothered any more.

Not saying I don’t like a drink - just I can take it or leave it. Saying that, I had a lovely few hours on Saturday taking advantage of the silly price of beer in 'Spoons! Then again, I won’t be out, out on a Saturday now until the end of November - rugby season starts this weekend and I’ll be driving to my club and all over the country most Saturdays until late April.

Chin, chin!

Hi

I had IDC and high grade DCIS which were ER+. I was advised a small amount of alcohol was ok. Sorry I can not remember the exact recommendation (one glass of wine a week or similar).

But I have stopped drinking altogether as there is research which shows, and explains how alcohol has an effect on Estrogen, which then reduces the effectiveness of hormone therapy. This was an important factor to me. I understand you’re not taking hormone therapy, but my thinking would be reduce the odds of it coming back.

Its personal choice, and there are many on here that continue to drink because its there bit of normal and joy, and let’s be honest, when going through cancer treatment you sometimes crave for something normal!

Perhaps make some enquiries with your health team to satisfy your own mind. Cheers x

Hi @tuttifrutti
I was diagnosed IDC with dcis ER+ this time so decided to give up drinking altogether. Have never been a big drinker anyway and can take it or leave it. As this was my second diagnosis and I can’t tolerate the AI’s or tamoxifen I figure this is another way to try and reduce the risk that I can do.
