DCIS only one side but choose double mastectomy?

Hi, I was diagnosed with multi-focal DCIS In left breast and recommended a mastectomy to the left side and I would like to elect DEIP reconstruction. My right breast is current fine, but will need the yearly checks etc. I am told I could only have tummy DEIP treatment once. I am almost now thinking of a double mastectomy, just to get everything out of the way now, even if the chances of DCIS or cancer developing in the right breast is not, by any means a foregone conclusion. Am I completely bonkers to think of doing this!??

In a word no. Mine was in asi e but only Grade 1 stage 1 at time of surgery and I have given some thoughts to what I would do if I were to get a recurrence and itā€™s certainly something I would consider . I will be 60 next year and would probably opt to just go flat . Xx

Sorry that these are the choices you are having to make. I agree with previous posts: no!
I was diagnosed with DCIS lever 3 this year. I had a lumpectomy, they found some invasive cancer and discovered I am BRCA2 mutation positive. So I has a lymph node removed along with my ovaries back in April. All was fine, and Iā€™m going in for a mastectomy in Nov. (double).
While I appreciate that recurrence chances vary, I also think that for most of us wanting to minimize the chances of doing any of this again are pretty high on the agenda.
So no, itā€™s not crazy, in the end you will choose what is right for you :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Totally with you on this, Iā€™m 78 and really struggling with the S/E of letrozole. Iā€™m also worried that if I donā€™t persevere with it then the cancer will come back. Right now if they offered me a double mastectomy ā€œjust in caseā€ Iā€™d go for it. The thought that there could still be tiny grains of cancer floating around in my breasts just waiting for the opportunity to give me more grief is driving me nuts. I will be having a very serious conversation with my surgeon at my one year appointment in November.

Whatever you decide to do itā€™s the right decision for you and thatā€™s what matters. Stay strong, all will be good. xxx

Hey lovely I think everyone on here can understand how youā€™re feeling and you are definitely not bonkers, it is absolutely understandable!! Iā€™m hitting my one year since my lumpectomy tomorrow and will be having my first mammogram post surgery in December or Januaryā€¦. Iā€™m dreading it!! Iā€™m also thinking why did I not just have a double mastectomy and reduce the risk altogether!! If Iā€™m one of the unlucky ones and it returns then I am absolutely having both boobies removed!!
You stick to what you feel is right for you is my opinion!!
Iā€™m regretting saying I didnā€™t want a mastectomy because itā€™s in the back of my head that it may have spread!! But this forum is awesome in giving support to each person on hereā€¦. Thank you all and all the very best!! Xx
Ps I didnā€™t tolerate the Letrozole either and as it only gave me 2% ā€˜protectionā€™ I spoke with the cancer team and we all agreed quality of life was important for me so I stopped taking them.

I chose to have double mastectomy and am 2 weeks past surgery now and so pleased with the decision. I was pleasantly surprised when I first looked at the scar across the chest it is so neat and I do not miss having breasts at all. I had a lumpectomy for DCIS in my right breast 24 yrs ago and nothing since - no symptoms of anything wrong just thought Iā€™d self refer for a. Mammogram as Iā€™d havenā€™t had one since 73 yrs old (government legislation) and was shocked to be recalled end of May to be told your cancer has returned -!I had a large tumour in the right breast and one behind it so I was told I needed a mastectomy but when the left breast ultrasound showed numerous tumours in the left breast it seemed sensible to have both breasts removed. I have the results of surgery next week and think well if anything else is wrong they will deal with it. I have had lymph nodes removed and was sent out of hospital with 2 drains which came out okay but so painful where theyā€™ve been in. It will go as long as the exercises are done regularly. Remembering to stand up tall and straight is vital too! I found ā€˜someone like meā€™ on breast cancer now brilliant to talk through how I was feeling and their experience so helpful- lovely ladies. Hope this helps people making a decision about their surgery! Iā€™ve also not had reconstruction but will have prosthesis fitted later ( good for winter wearing jumpers!)

Just wanted to say thank you for all your kind replies! I will be talking to my breast surgeon soon. I still donā€™t know which way to go, removing ā€˜healthyā€™ breast seems like a big move, but also an insurance policy against something happening in the futureā€¦thanks again!
