Delaying radiotherapy for genetic test results

Hi - I had a lumpectomy in mid September and lymph node biopsy and they got it all and there was no spread. I’ve been on tamoxifen for a month and my radiotherapy planning scan is on Monday 15/12. I’m told that my 5 days of treatment will probably be the first week of January.

I’d been flagged for genetic testing at diagnosis as my mum had breast cancer. When I saw the oncologist a month ago she said that genetic testing could take 6-8 months and so she wanted me to have radiotherapy in the meantime. She thought it would happen much sooner than it has.

I’ve had my genetic counsellor appointment today. They want to offer me genetic testing and I’ll get my bloods done on Monday. Results will be 8-12 weeks later.

I have struggled with fatigue since surgery and I don’t think I want to have radiotherapy and all its side effects in January if there’s a risk that by the end of Feb I’m told I’ve a gene that means I might be needing to think about prophylactic surgery.

Would it make much difference outcomes wise if I put off radiotherapy until potentially March ? That way I could go ahead with it if I don’t have a problematic gene.

Has anyone else been in this situation ? Grateful for any thoughts / advice as it feels like a lot to figure out !
