[Delays in reconstruction](https://Delays in reconstruction) Hi . I had a mastectomy in August 2023 following an inflammatory breast cancer diagnosis. I was advised I would require a delayed reconstruction due to radiotherapy post surgery. I was finally put on plastic surgery list in March 2024 but have since been advised that due to increasing backlog, to expect reconstruction no earlier than 2026. Im based in Scotland, keen to understand whether such lengthy delays are everywhere. It feels like such a lengthy wait!
Hi shareen
I’m in wales and had a lumpectomy 4yrs ago next march, which left me with a very deformed breast which is 2 cup sizes smaller than my good breast. I was also told i would have to wait for reconstructive surgery because i was also having radiotherapy. I am still on the waiting list and still have no idea when i will be able to have surgery. I understand that there are patients who need to come before me but the waiting and not knowing
Is really tough.
Hope you will be able to have your reconstruction soon.
Carolyn x
I had to wait for 11 months after deciding to have reconstructive surgery , a long wait , think it’s different for each hospital trust , I am in West Yorkshire x
I had my mastectomy in 2021 a week after diagnosis of breast cancer but had to wait over 3 years for my reconstruction, which I finally had 2 weeks before Christmas last year.
Im in the West Midlands and wasn’t put on ‘the list’ until 2023, which I was quite annoyed about.
I was told if there’s an urgent patient, they’ll go before you.
Must have been a lot of urgent patients in 3 years…
(My surgeon did indicate that they have been instructed to get the backlog of long waiting patients seen to, probably since Wes Streetings frenzy to clean up the NHS. )
I really feel like those who clinically require delayed reconstruction seem to be de-prioritised and who knows when surgery is going to be!
