Dental treatment and bisphos

Has anyone had to have dental treatment while on bisphos?

I’ve had a large filling come out with very little tooth left to fill, giving me nagging toothache especially drinking something hot.

I know you must mention to the dentist about bisphos just wondering whether anyone else has any info?

Hi Denio

I am a dental hygienist and work in a dental hospital. our guidelines with patients on bisphosphonates is to be very cautious whilst doing extractions or any invasive work as the jawbone may have some osteoporosis. A routine filling should be OK done in a normal dental surgery , but if they if they need to do an extraction they would likely refer you to a specialist. And you are very right in saying you must tell the dentist first about your meds. I am sure they would be able to give you a temporary filling even if they did need to refer to get you out of pain.

sorry I also meant to say, make sure your dentist takes an xray of the affected tooth just to rule out that there is any infection caused by the bisphos. If your dentist is switched on he should do anyway

Hi

I had a huge chunk of tooth break off last year and also my crown fell out!!! When the crown came out, it took a large part of tooth with it, hence, there was not alot left to attach the crown back on to!! It was decided that a denture was the way to go!!

I was heavily pregnant at the time so dentist and I decided it would be best to wait until I’d had the baby to do the work needed.
Unfortunately, 2 days after having baby, I was dx with bone mets - and therefore was being put on Zometa ivs.

When I went to the dentist, we again discussed things - the huge filling wasnt a problem but the crown was. I didnt want any problems with my jaw and dentist didnt advise digging about to get the roots out!!! So, I have a gap in my teeth (at the back) - and although I’m not really that happy with it - I am willing to put up with the roots being left there until I have a problem.

Dont think that I’ve been much help to you but what I was trying to say was, that fillings etc appear to be ok but its extractions that present the problems, I think.

Good Luck

Hi Cathy,

Thanks very much for the info very helpful. The filling is large not much tooth left (no tooth came away with it), so hoping dentist will be able to re-fill, don’t want any added problems!

Hi Anne,

Thanks very much for posting. As mentioned above to Cathy hoping the dentist will be able to re-fill.

I had two new crowns (top set, right in the middle) last year, as my gums had receded and there was a gap between the crowns and my gums which was painful in any kind of wind - one way of keeping my mouth shut hubby said! I have a really good dentist who also works at the major hospital in Plymouth. I had no problems whatsoever, except paying the almost £500 bill.

I’m on zometa and also chemo and had part of my tooth chip off 2 years ago (!). It doesn’t cause me any problems but the hospital did say that if I decided to have it done I would need to go on some sort of ‘cover’ by which I presume they mean anti-biotic. My dentist is also reluctant to do even a clean up on my teeth.

Lucky for me that my teeth are still okay!

I have similar - basically if it involves the jawbone e(xtraction or root canal) it is bad, but fillings OK. I too have half a tooth still! Must go to the dentist now you remind me…
