Hi
My tooth snapped off last night. I’ve emailed my nurse to ask if I can have dental treatment like a temp filing as Ive still got 10 weeks of chemo to go. Has anyone else experienced this? Hopefully the nurse will reply today with advice x
I had dental work done during Chemo. All that happened was that I had to make my appointment as close as possible to my next chemo session and then have bloods done just before this to check that I was fit for dental work. Luckily I was. Good luck
Thanks for your reply, I’m on weekly chemo and had my bloods on Tuesday and they were ok. Nurse is just checking with oncologist that I can have dental treatment today x
Oh! no, hope you can get it fixed today, I’m terrified of the dentist so dont envy you xx
So I had to go to oncology for blood tests, then take the blood test results to the dentist. The has done a temp filing. No drilling or X-rays allowed but tooth is healthy so no antibiotics.
Dentist said that in chemo our mouths don’t produce much saliva so we’re more prone to cavities. We’re to keep using mouthwash and if necessary he can prescribe fake saliva to give more wash around the mouth. Wish we were told more about oral health with chemo.
So if you have any dental issues, the process is to phone bcn, they’ll speak to oncologist who will ask for bloods. Then you take blood test results to dentist: the dentist won’t touch you unless they have a copy of blood test results. The dentist is allowed to do bare minimum until after chemo. Hope this helps anyone….not that I want anyone to dental issues! @warmfuzzies for info
Thanks for that heads up. I did go to the dentist for a checkup before i was due to have chemo in April (that was cancelled and now Im due to start in a couple of weeks). I filled out the form that said I had chemo and the dentist didnt even mention it. He’s an odd bloke but he’s NHS so I’m not complaining.
Good to know Id need bloods to go if anything happened though. Blimey, so much to be aware of! x
I snapped a tooth at Christmas which needed to be extracted unfortunately. I had finished my chemo but had it removed before radiotherapy after checking with oncologist. I wasn’t told about dental problems with chemo until my visit to the dentist. He prescribed me toothpaste with extra fluoride called Durophat? which I now get from the gp.
