DEXA Scan Schedule

I had a DEXA scan January 2022. I take Letrozole. I asked about a scan last year and they emailed me to say it would be 5x yearly. I keep reading about annual DEXA scans for women taking Letrozole. I wonder why mine is 5x years. I am aged 65.

I’m on Anastrozole and mine is 5 yearly

Interesting, as I was told 2 yearly for Dexa and arranged this through my GP. I too am on Letrozole. osteoporosis was found from my first Dexa. I also am taking Risedronate (for the bone density). I am keen to understand whether the Risedronate is helping with bone density, only a Dexa will be able to provide the information. Perhaps discuss with GP. Best wishes.

Hi naturaljazz

Thank you for posting.

It is natural to have questions about how often you will need follow up DEXA scans, especially when you have read that some women are having their scans yearly.

The frequency of DEXA scans varies according to the results of your baseline scan and also according to local protocols. It may be helpful to talk to your GP or treatment team about the results of your scan last year as @smithy1 suggests. They will be able to explain the reason why your next scan is recommended for 5 years.
