Diagnosed triple neg but biopsy result confusing

Hello,

Ive been told im triple negative by docs and about to start treatment.

Yesterday i had a (very delayed!) letter from the breast consultant with biopsy results written down. They were ‘left upper medial grade 3 IDC with high grade DCIS ER4, PR2, HER2 FISH negative.’

Could i ask what the ER 4/ PR 2 means? Does it just mean i have very low levels of hormone receptors, rather than 0?

Many thanks

Hey @wildthingsare

That does sound confusing!

I think the best thing to do here is contact your BCN and ask them to explain it to you.

Hi wildthingsare,

Thanks for posting asking about your recent letter and what your biopsy results mean.

As @mssteel says we would always suggest discussing this with your treatment team so they can explain what it means for you, so do contact your breast care nurse.

Pathology results often give a score to show the amount of hormone receptors on the cancer cells and the proportion of cancer cells with oestrogen (ER) or progesterone (PR) receptors. The scoring system is known as the Quick or Allred score and gives a score of between 0 and 8. For both of these, the higher the scores, the more ER-positive or PR-positive the breast cancer is. If oestrogen is not helping your breast cancer grow, it’s known as ER-negative. If progesterone is not helping the breast cancer grow, it’s PR-negative. A score of ER 4 and PR 2 is usually considered low, but your treatment team will be able to discuss what this means in terms of treating your breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Our booklet understanding your pathology results has further information you may find helpful.
