Diagnosed with breast cancer

I found a lump just beneath my armpit so my GP referred me to the breast clinic. On the 5th Dec I went for a scan and a mammogram. I was informed the mammogram was clear but not sure what the lump was so I had to do a biopsy. The appointment to get my results was tge 14th of Jan 19 but got a call on the 20th Dec that my appointment has been moved up and I should come in on 21st. I was not nervous or worried because my mammogram was clear and my belief that all is well.

Well, I was diagnosed with cancer on 21st of December. The journey to find the primary source was not an easy one but was finally confirmed it was breast cancer on 31st Jan after numerous test and biopsys. I am having surgery on 15th Feb, a wire guided wide local excision and right axillery node clearance. I am scared because I think my life is about to change and because it is now so real. Previously, I have been hoping for the best that I will be told this was all a mistake but now it is real and I have to start dealing with it and I can no longer ignore this.

I am not sure how to deal with the diagnosis but I am believing all will be well because that is all that keeps me going.

Hi Mynissi,

First of all, welcome & glad you found us, but of course, you’d rather not be here.

Getting a diagnosis is a shock & I think we can all relate to how you feel now.

Thankfully, although it doesn’t feel like it, it will now be dealt with & there’s every reason to be positive & good to hear that you feel that way.

Loads of us have been through it & come out the other side, as you will.

Hi Mynissi, sorry you find yourself here, but this is an excellent site for information and support. Your reaction is very normal , and I’m sure everyone here has hoped that it’s a mistake, or a bad dream and that tomorrow life would be back as it was. I think your attitude is admirable , as life has dealt you a crap hand of cards, and you are playing that hand as best you can. I think you have been fortunate in having such a speedy response to your diagnosis, and you are in the system with all cylinders firing to get you well . For some ladies on here waiting for results, and then waiting for treatment has been a real issue. My advice would be to take one day at a time, and not to look too far ahead or try to guess what is going to happen. Also, stay away from Google . If you need info then look at the odf’s on here. I found them invaluable, especially trying to understand the terminology around pathology. You sound a very strong and determined lady, and I hope you’ll keep us informed of progress . Best wishes for the op. X

Hi Mynissi, sorry you find yourself here.  It really is a tough time after diagnosis but like others have said; many more of us have been through it and are now moving on with our lives.  It’s a huge shock and a lot to process so just give yourself time.  You may want to chat with others on the “going through treatment” threads regarding surgery.   Best wishes.
