Diagnosed with IDC

I think I am still in shock despite having had my surgery only yesterday.

I was called for a routine mammogram and they called me back for a second  At this appointment they told me there was suspicious tissue and wanted to do a biopsy. They did that immediately and I had to wait a week for the result. I was called while at work to be told the cells were malignant. I had no idea what that meant until they said “you have breast cancer”. I sent into immediate shock but I remembered I had a disc at home with a mammogram result from 8 years previously when I had a cyst. I was told back then I had calcifications that need to have a close eye. I thought nothing of it until this mammogram. When reviewing the disc and comparing with my current mammogram they could see a slight difference so called me in for another biopsy on what looked like additional calcification. That came back benign.

I finally went to see the breast surgeon who confirmed I had 35mm of DCIS and stage 1 IDC which was invasive. One of my receptors was positive so I definitely have to have hormone treatment. I am still waiting for the results of my HER2 and am really hoping that is not positive so that I don’t have to have chemo. I went in for my op yesterday which was a lumpectomy and because I have invasive cancer they took 3 nodes to check from the lowest part. They were clear on the ultra sound but they want to make sure there is no cancer there at all. Right now I’m at the waiting stage where I will see the surgeon on the 15th for all my results and a treatment plan. All very surreal. It’s as if it’s not happening to me. Husband had been amazing and so have family. Anyone else at a similar stage? Xx

Welcome to the forum, Getorade & yes, we’ve all been there.
I remember well, that sense of unreality, as if there was a pane of glass between me & the world!
Like you, mine was found by routine mammo & now being over 2 years post treatment, I’m very glad I went for the mammo, as I very nearly didn’t.
I also had radiotherapy & am now on hormone treatment & am doing just fine ?

I’m on tamoxifen. I do have the option of going onto anastrozole, but as I’ve been fine on tamox, the surgeon & onc were happy for me to stay on it.
Mine was stage 1 too & the bc was grade 2, her-

Hi Ann,

Do you have any side effects on Tamoxifen? I’m so scaded of taking it. I already have psoriatic arthritis in my fingers and I’m hoping this medication isn’t going to take me out completely.

Did you have any nodes involved?

Xx

I’ve been prescribed venlafaxine to counteract the bit flushes since stopping HRT which is working well. So I’m hoping with that brand and this it won’t be so bad.

Thanks for sharing, I know everyone is different so it may take me a while to find the brand that works for me.

Hi Ann

That’s true, I rialto didn’t think that mainly individuals struggling with the treatment will pay and there will be others out there where it works fine so thanks for that. Xx

Can I ask was your HER2 negative? I’m still waiting for my results to come back and if it does I will need to have Herceptin and chemo :frowning:
