Diagnosed with "just a cyst" and 8 week follow up!

Hi, i am new to the forum, I had my appointment at the Breast clinic yesterday after seeing my GP 2 weeks ago for spontaneous Brown Nipple discharge which is unilateral and from a single duct, I also mentioned at the appointment I have a couple of lumpy areas under the nipple which “feel different”. I was physically examined yesterday and went over my symptoms, the consultant asked me to squeeze some discharge out to test for blood but I couldn’t get anything to come out. I then had a mammogram and an ultrasound scan. During the scan I heard the Dr talking about what he was doing with another junior Dr and I heard him say papilloma but then went on to say I have “some small 4mm cysts” and i don’t need any further treatment. I do have a follow up appointment in 8 weeks though, which i assume is to check if I’m still symptomatic, this wasn’t actually explained to me and I forgot to ask at the time. Does this all sound like normal protocol ect? I’m worried that it might not just be a simple cyst and 8 weeks feela ike such a long time till I’m seen again. Thank you for any replies.

Hi @panda2203

Eight weeks does feel like a long time to wait but it is pretty typical to do a follow up appointment to explain your results to you. And also if any further treatment is needed which can also be needed for benign conditions too.

You could also ring one of the BCN on here via the support line and chat to them about your concers or maybe one of the breast care nurses at your clinic. They usually have a telephone appointment system for that .

I did that when I had worries about the reasons for the bioosy I am having and everything was explained to me which allayed my fear. And the breast care nurses at your clinic will be able to access your notes to answer questions more fully for you.

You can also write down any questions when you see the consultant at the clinic so you dont worry that you will forget to ask something !

I attended the breast clinic in November regarding a lump and was reassured at the time that it was normal breast tissue. However, when I returned to my GP in February, they were concerned as the lump had changed and increased in size, so I was referred back to the breast clinic.

At my follow up appointment, I had an ultrasound and was again told that it appeared to be normal breast tissue and a fibroadenoma, and I was discharged. However, I have since received a further appointment for six weeks’ time. The letter states this is because a more discrete lump was felt and that a follow-up is needed.

While this has been presented as routine and for clarity, I am feeling worried and confused given the changes in the lump and the need for ongoing review.

Maybe this is a standard procedure they do?

Hi @kemric ,

I have had exactly the same (or nearly ) as your situation.

I was told orginally at a private appointment that I had a benign fibroadenoma after core biopsy.

But now after more scans and a second benign core biopsy in the nhs clinic they felt the mammogram and ultrasound images was discordant with the benign fibroadenoma which is growing and about 5 cm. ( I asked for my pathology report) So now I have had a surgical Biopsy and am waiting to see if it is definetly Benign . My scans were both Birads 3 . The clinical team do think it will be benign still ,but the MDT felt it should be out.

So it sounds to me that they are looking after you and would want to be on the safe side though worrying for you when it happens. The procedure they decide to do after initial scans, is always decided in the MDT meeting so individual to you but based on medical guidelines .

Thinking of you when you have your appointment.
