Diarrhoea Side Effects

Hi everyone

Hope you all are doing well

My mum completed 3 EC treatment and last week she begun her 1st out of the 4 Docetaxel and Phesgo treatment.

Some of the side effects she had was nausea, heartburn, tiredness. Contacted triage team and they said it’s chemo related side effects. They prescribed lanzaprazole which helped with heartburn.

However, her dirrhoea hasn’t stopped as of yet, she has about 2-3 loose bowel, its liquid, contacted back, they said they will have to do a stool sample which I can’t take my mum in to hospital to have that done and see doctor until Tuesday due to work and my mum doesn’t speak English well.

Has anyone experienced frequent loose bowel movement that lasted 7 or more days. Any tips and advises on how to relief those symptoms in the meantime until I sort her stool sample.

Thank you

I’m surprised they didn’t suggest your Mum take Imodium to stop the diarrhoea. That’s what they told me to take when the Filgrastim injections gave me diarrhoea. 7 days is a long time. Is her temperature ok? Make sure she is drinking plenty to replace the fluids she is loosing.

No they haven’t mentioned anything about that. I think my mum feels better now, she didnt had any loose bowel, only in the morning after that nothing. They told me to drop the stool sample at SDEC, figured later what it meant (same day emergency care) hehe. I think they just want to rule out there is no infection etc. So my dad will collect stool bottle from GP and will drop on Saturday but before that I need to call triage and let them know as I had to cancel appointment due to me and dad not available to take mum to hospital to have it checked.

I agree @twinks77 loperamide
Is the usual remedy. I have Pacs every week and phesgo every 3 weeks, and both Drugs causes diarrhoea. On my worst days I also have codeine to manage it. Worst means I cannot even finish a meal and I have to run to the loo.

Hopefully, I was hoping too that they would prescribe something but said they need to check stool. What I do is call back triage tomorrow and inform them that if SDEC unit is open on weekends which I think it must be open, my dad can drop it off

I had serious problems with diarrhea two weeks after finishing chemotherapy with Paclitaxel. I started having loose stools and in two days I was having watery stools many times a day. Staff from the cancer treatment centre wanted to see me and after blood test and abdominal X-ray done, they concluded the problems were side effects of chemo. I was given loperamid and Codeine for home and also advised to have low fiber starches like white rice and dioralyte sachets for dehydration. Hope the symptoms in your mum’s case have improved, if not you need to contact the helpline. In my case it took almost ten days to come back to normal with meds and strict diet (followed BRAT diet: banana, rice, apple, toast, you can find it on many websites, I took it from MD Anderson cancer centre). Best wishes x
