DIEP flap surgery experiences

Hi @kazziep

Welcome to the forum I have found it an invaluable space over the last 5 months for advice, support and a good old rant!

I have just had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, originally i was having a right only procedure but the surgeons did agree that a bilateral was a reasonable consideration in my case, since I had had fairly extensive treatment on my left breast in 2020, so there was still a risk associated with it. The patient choice and an unnecessary surgery argument seems to vary widely across the country, and it sounds like you have explored this option with your team? If you have concerns you could always ask for a 2nd opinion?

It was a long procedure but i am hoping is worth it so far the results are looking good but I am giving it 6 months to settle down. I did a lot of research when thinking about what to do, including https://keepingabreast.org.uk/ and https://restore-bcr.co.uk/ sites.

Wishing you all the best x

Morning @tracy1

I was discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon and it is lovely to be home! Feeling surprisingly good all things considered, i still have my DIEP drain in but that is manageable and should come out in the week.

I am not going for any epic treks yet, but improving day by day and hoping for a break from the rain so i can go for a very little walk with my family.

Hope all is goid with you?

Xx

Hi @Summer-sunshine

Sounds like you’ve done amazingly well! I’m so glad you are home :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Take it easy and look after yourself. I really hope you can get out for a little bit of fresh air soon.

I’m ok thank you, just awaiting my second WLE results.

Sending love and hugs to you :sparkling_heart: xx

@Seagulls Oh my goodness, what a lot for you to cope with. Sending hugs x

good luck I had diep surgery on 8/9/2022 at Guy’s and was home by Sunday afternoon despite all the crowds in London to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth who died on the day of my op. i was 67 when i had my diep and it is probably the best op for anyone with a bit of a tum and small breasts.

i luckily fell into this category. it’s exhausting the first night cos the nurse comes hourly to check the flap is alive and the blood is flowing to it. i also vomited into a well designed sick bag you can twist to keep the sick safely in. a great comfort to me along with a panic button to get painkillers instantly.

Go for it girl
