diet and lymphedema

Hello ladies
(Think I am gonna be a regular here again, like I was 4 years ago with my cancer)
During my BC treatment, from start to finish i went on a strict regime of healthy eating. I think it put me in some control of my rebeling body and also made me look and feel good. I sailed through surgery, recovery, MRSA and chemo was walk in the park. I think it was all to do with the way I looked after myself.
I have read avoid: dairy, alcohol, sugary stuff, caffeine, processed stuff and eat ,lots of fresh stuff etc. A detox style regime that I was on before.
I am starting today.I feel invogorated with my decision. i am gonna beat this! besides I could do with losing half stone.
Has anyone done this and had positive results with boosting their system?
(If i start to resemble Gillian McKeith, I will stop immediately!!!)

Hi went to support group where talk was from a specialist lymphedema nurse and she said there was gathering evidence that being over weight was one of the triggers for lymphedema - I am definately about 2 - 3 stone overweight - so have made decision this weekend to increase activity - Zumba, aquafit and walking - cut down on the food stuffs you list and cut down on wine intake - hope it will all make a difference.

Hi, I haven’t heard that weight has an effect on Lymphodemea, I have to say, i have it in my arm, chest and breast, but I don’t think I’m overweight, maybe a couple of pounds.

I have looked too at all the diets and my onc told me eat and drink what you want within moderation, apart from soya which i’m not allowed.

will be interesting to follow this post.

Hi I have lymphoedema and am a few stone overweight,my BCN told me that losing weight would help my lymphodeama.I don’t think avoiding everything is necessary, everything in moderation I think.I have cut right back on sugar and high fat foods,my OH is diabetic so I’m always conscious of the sugar and fat contents in food.

Norberte…report to us all!! We can all commend you when you succeed or wave our puffy little fists at you when you’ve cheated.
This club is free!! xx

Hi Ladies
I joined Rosemary Conely to help me get fitter and loose weight. I’ve been having pain in my joints and assumed it was the extra weight I carry. (Tamoxifen strikes again) I did try Slimming world but Like you Norberte can’t see the point in paying to stand on the scales. With Rosemary Conely you get to stand on the scales and 45min excersise class. I’m off sick at the moment with depression so decided to do the Premier Rate. Thats £24 for a month. But I get to do as many classes as I want per week. This week I plan to do 3. Even when I go back to work I should manage 2. The advantage I have is one of the Instructors has also had BC so she tells me which bits are good or not so good for my Lympho. The “magic” diet is straight forward calorie counting with low fat food being the priority.
Loved the sponge discription.
Happy days

Hi I did the Rosemary Conley about 8 years ago and lost about 2 stone, my OH was diagnosed with high cholesterol and diabetes and the Rosemary Conley diet is ideal for him( I think her husband had high cholesterol and that’s how she devised the diet)My OH wouldn’t come to the classes but followed the diet,Ive been thinking about rejoining I’ve lost a little bit of weight by myself but I think like norberte I need someone to keep me focused. Also the exercise is a bonus and you go at your own pace and just do what your comfortable with.

Hi I found this site about nutrition and lymphoedema

lymphnotes.com/article.php/id/26/

Also was looking for juicer recipes, mainly because my teenage son’s diet is worrying me he refuses to eat any veg except raw carrot and although I have loads of fruit in the house he never touches it,think he must be rebelling or something lol, anyway I came across this recipe from a lady who has lymphoedema she says it has helped her,not sure if its just a load of rubbish but I suppose it can’t hurt to try it.

My mum spoke to my nurse today who said Mld was the best treatment and compression was for when the arm had gone down. Nhs didn’t like to pay for it. So will carry on private if I have to. I am gona do that juice daily and take the dietary advise mainly protein and water from Saturday. I believe in all that stuff tho have to say think a bit disgusting combo putting beetroot with fruit but will pinch nose and swallow. Will keep all informed. Thanks for that x

I was thinking the same but mine is the celery can’t stand it,it tastes like soap lol.Maybe when its all mixed together it might taste nice (not holding my breath though lol).

Mel - can’t see how that juice would work but willing to give it a go as it looks so healthy anyway.

Positivethinker - I’m also with you in needing to lose weight. Be careful though to have some carbs as a protein/water diet is very hard on the kidneys. I’m trying to go for plenty of plant protein such as lentils, baked beans, chick peas etc and then have wholegrain rice which is much more filling than ordinary rice. Don’t know if you’re near the coast but hopefully you can get some nice fish out there.

Happy weight loss!

Mmmm,I have my doubts too but as you say its healthy.I’ve just brought myself a new all singing all dancing food processor and am itching to start using it lol.I think the juicer will get used the most I seem to forget to eat the right amount of fruit and veg so does my son as I mentioned before he won’t eat any fruit,I don’t think its because he doesn’t like it I think its because he can’t be bothered lol.So juicing will be a way of getting it inside him and myself. My OH is really good at eating his fruit and veg,he’s diabetic and I’m always going on at him to eat the right things, maybe I should practice what I preach lol.
Ooh I’m starting to waffle on a bit.

Well all I can say is YUK lol

Hi - I too have been told being overweight makes lymphoedema worse and harder to control. I am currently 4 and half stone overweight. Seeing new nhs ld nurse who says mld only has a temporary effect and has put me in a made to measure thicker sleeve and glove. She says the arm will do down dramatically if I can lose the weight. But says some of the weight is caused by the amount of fluid in my arm.

Hi Girls,
I was told by my physio that weight has an effect on lymphodeama. I piled weight on when i started taking tamoxifen but have managed to loose just over a stone since november by following the “intermitant diet” on the genesis web site. I follow a strict veggie diet for 2 days a week and observe what I am eating the rest of the time. It works for me because I dont feel like I am constantly on a diet. I am 12 months down the line from developing lymphodeama and wear compression garments during the day, I’, not sure that I have lost enough weight for it to have an effect but i’m keeping my fingers crossed.
