Diet changes whilst on Abemaciclib

Hi,
those of us on Abemaciclib will be all to familiar with its side effects in terms of diarrhoea etc. I’m aware that some advice is for a low fibre diet, reducing dairy products and also reducing raw veg/fruit….but as I am also trying to keep my cholesterol in check, loose chemo weight, increase protein and generally eat as healthy as possible I was wondering is there any official dietary advice or even meal plans to help steer me through this minefield!
I’ve always thought that I ate reasonably healthily but now the advice is taking me in a completely new direction and I’m not sure what to prioritise.
If not, then it would be a great research project!

Hi
After chemo, which gave me severe diarrhoea, I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. Although I’m aware you don’t have this, I’d like to make you aware of the Monash University App. I struggled with controlling my bowels for a long time, and like you, I like to eat healthily. By downloading this App, it alerted me to lots of foods I could eat eg. Whilst brassicas and the pea family were out, spinach, leaf beet etc were in. I keep it on my phone and can refer to it when eating out. I actually continue with gluten, however that’s my choice.
I wish you all the best in your search for new eating choices x

Hi, I finished 2 years of Abemaciclib just before Christmas. I had to reduce my dairy intake as it was definitely a trigger for bouts of diahorrea. If I was careful to have small portions of cheese, cream on desserts I was usually ok. Greek yoghurt was fine. I also found some salad leaves triggered it but not others. I was ok with most fruit and veg.
Altoan, it might be a bit of trial and error for yourself as I think we all react differently to Abemaciclib. Maybe find a healthy diet you would like to follow and then tweak it depending how it affects your stomach. Best wishes.

Hi altoan

Thanks for posting.

It can be difficult to juggle different dietary requirements to eat healthy but also manage side effects such as the diarrhoea with abemaciclib. Do let your treatment know about any ongoing side effects you are having so they can best support you and make suggestions about what might help

Unless your treatment team have suggested something specific, it may be a bit of trial and error as @Galaq mentions. Everyone can react differently to medication and may have different triggers. The hospital you attend may produce their own patient information on lower fibre diets.

Someone people with irritable bowel syndrome will be recommended a low FODMAP diet and this is what it appears the Monash University app that @Chrissy19 mentions is for.

The Penny Brohn link @Shoo suggests didn’t open for us but wonder if it was this one. there is also a cancer and nutrition helpline at the Word Cancer Research Fund.

Do also speak to your treatment team or GP about a referral to a dietician. You may also want post on this section of the forum as these posts are not locked.
