Dimple but Dr says it's fine?

Hello folks, please can I have your advice? I’ve noticed for several months that when I raise my arms up I get this pucker/dimple on the underside of one of my boobs, just below the areola. For a while I thought it was maybe an indent from my bra or something, but I only ever wear sports bras or soft crop-top type bras so no wires or seams here. Then I realised it was there even on braless stay-at-home days. I went to the breast clinic twice earlier in the year because I’ve been experiencing breast pain and shooting armpit pain, but mostly on the other side- the one without the dimple. I have rib pain this side too, and it radiates to my back a little. I do now also have pain on the side with the dimple. The two times earlier in the year, I was examined and given an ultrasound. Both times I was told everything is fine. I went back for a third time to the breast clinic about a month ago and was examined again by the surgeon. He said he was not at all concerned. He booked me in for another ultrasound but not for a couple months. I don’t understand why the unresolved pain and now dimpling isn’t concerning really… It’s concerning to me!! I have anxiety and I can’t really bring myself to examine my (annoyingly large and full of, what to me, always feels like lumpy tissue) breasts. I always spin out when I try so I don’t anymore past what could be felt anyway by washing in the shower and putting on lotion. For context I’m 35, never been pregnant and possibly in the early days of perimenopause (or at least this is basically how my GP has rationalised the breast pain- “changing hormones”). Do you think I’m on the correct course of action? I’m really worried the doctors have been missing something all along. I’ve not been offered a mammogram or MRI- just had a couple of cursory seeming ultrasounds. I’ve been told I have dense breast tissue. What could I do to be sure I’ve done all I could?

Not to worry you but I had a dimple under my right breast and it turned out to be a 1.7 cm idc which was found by mammogram. You should tell them you want a mammogram as well to put your mind at ease. I hope everything goes well for you! :two_hearts:

Hello there, sorry to hear you are going through this. Again, not to worry you, but I had a similar indentation on my lower left breast and it turned out to be one of four small tumours (16mm) - The indentation was caused by cancer “pulling” and destroying healthy cells. After your ultrasound did they explain what the indentation was derived from as they are experts and should be able to explain this. Best to get checked out with a mammogram so you can be reassured, or get any necessary treatment? I understand cancer can be harder to spot in dense breast tissue. My experience of the NHS through my treatment so far is that you have to be quite insistent about the checks and medical procedures you want at times. Best of luck with everything xx

Hi - I have a dimple on the underside of my left breast which can only be seen if I raise my hands above my head. I have been diagnosed with 37mm tumour invasive ductal carcinoma. The mammogram hardly showed the tumour and it was the MRI that showed it very clearly. My consultant could hardly feel the tumour - very slight she said and asked how I found it. I also think it was missed last year on my routine mammogram as I found it myself 5 weeks ago. See if you can have a mammogram - the dimpling is similar to mine. My ultrasound showed the tumour as I had a biopsy taken before the MRI. I’m having a mastectomy on Thursday this week. Be insistent. Good luck.

Thank you for the comments. Partially through hearing these experiences I made phonecalls and got my assessment bright forward and got a mammogram as well as ultrasound. Got both done today (very efficient and empathetic service, especially as I was being a bit of a wimp before my first ever mammogram after hearing horror stories. As a side reassurance to others, I didn’t find it at all painful and it wasn’t as bad as I thought at all- I would not be put off doing one again if/when needed in future). Both exams came back clear, nothing of note at all. Excellent news of course, but just wondering what this dent and the new breast pain is all about.

Thank you for kindly sharing your experience and advice. I pushed for the mammogram and both that and the ultrasound were clear. The technician didn’t have any explanation about the dent though… Going to have a follow up with the breast surgeon and try to push him for an answer or possibly an MRI down the line. Thanks for giving me the push to advocate for myself. Hope that your treatment went well/is going well and that you will soon be back to great health if not already. Best wishes

Firstly I’m sorry that you had unwanted news from your investigations and I really hope the surgery went well and that you are relaxing and recovering.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and giving me the courage to advocate for myself. I pushed for the mammogram and both that and the US were clear thankfully. But the dent and ongoing breast pain are still a mystery. I will ask about the possibly of doing an MRI too after reading what you had written.

Best wishes for the rest of your treatment and recovery. Wishing you the best of health :beating_heart:

Hi, it’s been 6 years since my diagnosis and apart from letrozole side effects, things are going well. I hope you are fine as well!

Hi again everyone, I’ve had another follow up with the consultant who reiterated that my mammo and ultrasound are clear and that he is not at all worried. He said changes in breast tissue (due to weight loss, hormones etc- even though I’ve assured him I haven’t lost weight) can pull in the breast tissue. He says he’s going to ask another colleague to look through it all and he’s booked me to come in and see him again in 3 months. I can’t help but feel uneasy about it. I’ve not lost weight, I’m definitely not pregnant and even if I’m in the very earliest days of perimenopause, surely I’ve not yet had significant duct shrivelling in my boobs (if that’s even a thing), and unilaterally. I asked about lobular cancer as opposed to ductal and whether that would show up as I have read that it’s harder to detect and forms a web rather than a lump. He said it wouldn’t show up on a mammogram but it would have shown up on the ultrasound. I don’t know what to believe or what to do now. Has anyone been in a similar situation before? For the ladies who’s cancer was found after seeing a dimple/pucker, was it found on a mammogram/ultrasound or do you need an MRI to see everything? I really don’t want the contrast they give you unless absolutely needed! But obviously I also don’t want to have something important missed.
