Dimple - How often is it not breast cancer?

Hello!  This is my first time on this forum - any forum in fact!

So, I recently found a small dimple on my left breast that I can only see when i lift up my arm and tighten the skin.  Neither myself, nor any of the doctors can feel a lump. I do have a family history of BC - I am 36 and my mother died of breast cancer at around the age I am now.  My GP referred me to Breast Cancer Specialist. where I had an ultrasound followed by a mammogram, both of which came back clear. So all that is very positive.   I have a follow up appointment in a month and in the meantime, the consultant and radiologist will decide if i need further testing (mri, 3d scan).

I have read a lot of information about dimples, and i have found that finding detailed information is quite difficult.  I asked the consultant and the radiologist about other causes of dimples and they basically said that they are either cancer or unexplained.  My query is around how likely it is that a dimple is cancer.  I get the impression that it is very often cancer.  I was wondering whether anyone has any idea about how often dimples turn out to be cancer and how often they are simply unexplained.  I plan to ask this question to the consultant at my next appointment, but was wondering is anyone has any insight into this as I am spending days on end trying to find the answer and I don’t think it is magically going to appear after all that searching.

Thank you so much!

Hi Lis,
Good to hear you’ve been seen & they’re keeping an eye on you.
It’s difficult to say really, as any breast change can be a symptom of bc, but fortunately it usually isn’t. Conversely, there are those of us, me included, who had no symptoms at all. Mine was picked up by screening - so thank goodness for that!
Not a lot of help with your question, really. Maybe someone will be along with an idea on this.
You could post your question in the ‘ask our nurses’ section of the forum as well.

Thanks Lis, I’m absolutely fine!
From what I’ve seen here, mostly dimples do not turn out to be bc, as with any other breast change, really.
