Do I Really Need To Disclose This Information?

Hi, there,

In July 2008 I had a bi-lateral mastectomy with lymph node clearance on one side, and am now taking a course of Tamoxifen. I made a good recovery, and the long-term prognosis is very optimistic, so I now hope the whole horrid business is behind me.

I went for a beauty treatment earlier this week, and as I was a new client at the salon, they asked me to fill in a questionnaire. The questions included whether I had had any major operations and serious illnesses, to which I answered truthfully. What got on my nerves was the look of pity and concern that crossed the beautician’s face when she read the words BREAST CANCER. The thing is, I hate it when people feel sorry for me, and while I don’t keep it a huge dark secret, I would prefer not to tell anyone unless they have a genuine need to know.

I understand that if you go for a therapeutic treatment such as reflexology, it’s best to reveal your whole health picture to ensure that the therapy is safe and effective - but is it really necessary for a facial, say, or a pedicure?

Would appreciate anyone’s comments - thanks.

I chose carefully who I disclose my medical history to and I am afraid, I don’t tell the lady who does my facials or pedicures anything about my history. Now, I appreciate there may be good reasons why they ask these questions and it is not just about being nosey, but I think I know enough about my own health and treatment to know what might be of harm to me. However, if I was having anything like acupuncture or reflexology, I would disclose. It’s a personal choice and I stand by the consequences if there were any side effects from treatment.

Thankyou, Cathy. I know it’s probably a standard form and they’re doing it to cover themselves for ‘elfnsafety’ reasons, but what side effects could there possibly be?
