Hi I know this has been discussed before, but for anyone who isnt aware, it is well worth checking any critical illness insurance cover you may have, as invasive breast cancer may well be on the list of illnesses covered on your policy.
When I read this on here a couple months ago I contacted Aviva, provided some fairly basic details and uploaded a photo of a consultants letter to me detailing that the cancer was invasive – they agreed the full payout before I even had my surgey. They’re even reimbursing any payments made since the claim was made!
I’m very grateful to whoever started the thread I saw this on as quite honestly I dont think it would have occured to me to even check
Yes I claimed on mine with Scottish Provident.
I had aviva insurance and claimed on the critical illness policy…it was so easy and was shocked when the full amount went in my bank and not just the smaller amount…i contacted them thinking it was wrong but they said no i qualified fornthe full payout. It took a lot of stress away x
Yes, I had critical illness cover and received payment, however it took almost 5 months to receive it. Why? Because my notes from the Oncologist said I had a history of mystitis, which I did and they decided to dive straight into my GP notes. My GP was great and handled it quickly from their side but Oncologist took 8 weeks to complete the initial form (and yes, I kept handing her the form every time I seen her .
As soon as you have a diagnosis inform the insurance company as you may be in need of the money.
Hi, good to know it might take a while to get it thanks
My life assurance which I took out along with my mortgage has critical illness cover included. I’ve been told (informally) that they will pay out but still waiting for my GP to confirm everything which has delayed pay out. Scottish provident have been great chasing everything up and keeping me informed.
Definitely worth checking any plans you may have as I was already 6 months into the journey before I realised I was covered.
Just after posting earlier on today, I received a message to say that my pay out has been approved. Money will be in the bank in up to 11 days. That’s about 8 weeks from when I first applied.
That’s great @fubc something positive in the middle of all this is welcome isn’t it ?
Will definitely make the hit to my income this year easier to manage and we may even manage a nice family holiday when this bit of the journey is over. Good luck everyone
Hi there,
Would you be happy to tell me what your diagnosis was please?
As I have Aviva Critical illness and have put a claim in last week, I’m late to the party for putting the claim in, as I’ve only just realised I may qualify for a payout. I’m just wondering which level of payout I may get.
I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer grade 1, invasive tubular carcinoma, ER 8/8, HER2 negative. This is invasive and malignant. Just wondering what kinds of things they looked for when you put your claim in. Any help would Hi there,

Sorry for posting the same thing several times! It’s my 1st time on her and was trying to post whilst having a hot flush, these hormone suppressing tablets are causing havoc! Thanks for any help
Hi @shel1
My diagnosis was grade 2 invasive lobular (ER+ and PR+) cancer. The only information I have had to provide to this point other than general details re GP, consultant etc was a photo of one of the letters I received from my consultant. I received an email from Aviva about a week later confirming the claim was approved and it was for the full amount - just to add I haven’t actually received the money yet . I had checked and my policy specifies that my life cover and critical illness cover were for the same amount, so of course this may be differ between policies.
I am definitely not an expert on this, but from what I could glean, invasive cancer is covered but for those with DCIS it may not be unless an additional wider cover had been taken out.
Fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you from Aviva x
Oh thank you, I really appreciate you coming back to me.
I also have the understanding that ‘invasive’ cancer means the full payout, but just being impatient as haven’t heard anything yet.
I do have a lower critical illness cover for a smaller amount, so either way I should get something and in all honesty either amount will make such a difference.
Good luck on this and your recovery journey. x
I was also with Aviva and wasn’t going to put in a claim as I had DCIS and the policy looked like it wouldn’t cover it. However, I had a level of microinvasion and comedo necrosis and Aviva advised to put the claim in. I included my hospital discharge letter with the full pathology results and Aviva responded within 2 days to approve the full amount and the payment arrived the next day. A welcome positive in this stressful time.
Worth a try for anyone with early stage disease…nothing to lose by putting a claim in.
I hope you hear soon x
Hi no problem Hopefully you will hear soon, I just had a look and it was just over a week when I heard back so hopefully you will hear soon. As I say no sign of the money though and it’s more than a week since their email, good luck x
That’s good you got it @shine25 and so quickly , definitely think it’s worth anyone looking in to it, better to have tried and failed than to miss out . I wonder why the same company pays out with different time scales, it’s more than a week since they confirmed, I sure hope I didn’t make a mistake with the bank details
Hi I had invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) I put a claim in and sent them copies of my consultants letters confirming the diagnosis. They also wrote to my GP. I was paid out in about 5 weeks from start to finish. This was with Scottish Provident
