Does the size of a bone lesion really matter?

My mum recently read through her scan results and realised she had previously read it wrong!!

My mum has extensive lobular bone mets. One of these lesions measures 15cm in her femur bone. Initially she read it as the pin that was put in her leg to support it measured 15cm!! Not the actually cancer itself measures 15cm. It isn’t a soft tissue lesion, it is only a bone in her leg (so I keep telling myself). Would this make a difference to her overall prognosis? I know she is shocked at the size and I suppose I am looking for reassurance. Reassurance, but also the truth!

Any advice from people living with bone mets will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi Secondarysister2

From my experience size of metastases (especially in the bone) not always relevant to overall prognosis. Large mets in the bone can affect mobility: mets could be very close to the spinal cord; mets could be affecting the nerves. Most importantly, cancer makes bones brittle and very difficult to heal. That’s why doctors trying to avoid broken bones at all costs ( pins, implants, cement), and keep patients mobile as long as possible.

My metastases were discovered after I suffered with pain in my right hip for several month, bone scan picked up a large met there and smaller ones in few other bones. Had proximal femur replacement nearly 4 years ago to prevent the fracture. Otherwise having similar or same treatment as anyone with similar sbc diagnoses.

Warm hugs to you and your mum. Olga xx
