Don't cut your wig!

Probaby only me daft enough to do it, but I wouldn’t recommend cutting your wig youself. Go to a hairdresser!

I had two expensive wigs from the wig shop that I’m not too keen on. One looked good in the shop (in a badly lit cubicle) but looks too dark in normal light. The other is also brown but makes me look like Ozzy Osborne (don’t ask!). So, I bought a third wig off ebay for about £25 and this one was the best of all - it’s a darkish blonde colour, in a bob style with a fringe. The length just needed a slight trim and in a fit of madness I attacked it with the scissors… and cut it too short at the sides. I realised why hairdressers go to hairdressing school and actually train to do the job. If I could afford it, I’d buy another but money’s tight at the moment so… aaaarrrrghhh!

ANyway, don’t make my mistake - if that wig needs a-trimming then be brave and take it to your hairdresser!

Hi Nicola,

I have a wig, in a bob style that just needs little bit off the sides - so tempting, and I really like the sound that scissors make when they cut through hair, sort of scrunch, scrunch…was going to ask my 16 year old daughter to try it on while I gave it a little trim - maybe not then!!!

(I’ll get my wanna-be hairdresser kicks by trimming our Westie - he’s not fussy!)

Hiya

Oh dear… I cut one of my wigs, the fringe and although it was a bit of a hatchet job it kind of looks ok. I trimmed the bottom of the other one which looks fine, EXCEPT I was trying to dry it quickly one night and stupidly thought I’d give it a blow with the hairdryer. Burnt the fringe. I can just about get away with hiding it but god it itches!

I tie scarves around mine, it looks nice and you can use different ones and it does hide my burnt fringe a bit.

Well you’ve cheered me up and made me laugh - glad i’m not the only dippy one. I have a wig from the NHS that hangs all in my face - I’d just decided to trim it as I’m not wearing it at all. I will go VERY carefully, thanks for the words of warning!

hi
just a quickie how often should you wash a wig and what do you use?

Some people are consciencious and wash every week. I do mine about once a month (I wear a stockingy wig cap underneath). I use the proper wig shampoo and conditioner I was sold at the shop, but others on here use a mild or baby shampoo, and a little fabric conditioner in the final rinse. Turn wig inside-out, make sure the water is just warm, not hot, and don’t rub, just swish it about a bit in the water. Then I wrap it in a towel and squeeze gently all along. Turn in the right way and put it on a lemonade bottle or something (don’t stretch over a wig stand) and it’ll be dry by morning.
Easy peasy and only takes a couple of minutes. In the morning, give it a good shake upside-down, then gently brush out.

Thanks Jacquie i think i will call back at shop and get proper stuff, it looks really good and i was worrying it may look fluffy after or just shrink i only wear it when a hat isnt appropriate so it probably wont need doing often but had noticed it was looking a bit dull.
Thank again

He he ! I cut the fringe of my NHS wig - it wasn’t straight so I cut a bit more… the fringe is still uneven and very short. It looks dreadful. I then bought a beautiful wig and again, fringe too long and still I was tempted to have a go… low and behold, as bad as the first! SO, I wear headbands over the fringe and they look ok. I will never learn my lesson!!
