hi,
I am 37 and was diagnosed with bc in Jan. being not very clever don’t have any life insurrance/ critical illness cover. I live in a rented house with my partner and 2 boys. i have alway done a pension but never got round to this. now that i have alreadyh been diagnosed is there any suggestion as to what i could go for inssurrance wise or critical cover.
thanks
louise
Most companies want 5 years from end of treatment although some will give life ins after 2 yrs (depending on your pathology report) but with high premiums. Ive been told i will never be able to get critical illness now though.
Hi louise
I’m in a similar position- no cover at all. Being only 32 I didn’t think there was any rush! I have a 12mth old son + we had talked about needing to sort cover out but with a new baby we hadn’t got round to it by the time I was diagnosed when he was 8mths. I have lost alot of sleep about this and I’m kicking myself that my mortgage could now be paid off etc. I have checked + found I have an element of life cover on my teachers pension so that’s better than nothing I suppose. Just can’t believe I gave insurance on everything- the tv, fridge, pc, house, even the cat but not us!!
I’d also be interested to hear if anyone has any advice on this.
Thanks

Hi, I know this is a bit morbid, but some advice for anyone unmarried with children. My late partner and I never got around to marrying althouh we had been together for 8 yrs and had 2 children together. When he died suddenly from a heart attack 5 years ago our joint mortgage was paid off by our endowment, but we were in the process of setting up life/critical illness cover, so no payout there. But the biggy is that because we weren’t married I have never been entitled to any help from Widowed Parents Allowance or alike. I had to survive on Income Support for a while as my youngest had just been born, then returned to work part-time 3 years ago. Finances are tight, but would be so much worse if I had the mortgage to pay - as it is, I only have a small mortgage now due to needing a 3rd bedroom - but stil, I didn’t take out any cover for me as I cannot afford to.
Sorry to waffle here, but I would defo recommend to anyone thinking of getting married but not got around to it, to do so, you never know it may help a little. Best Wishes, Samm x
Hi,
When my partner and I took our mortgage out the insurance company would not cover me for critical illness cover because my Mum and Dad died when I was young both from a brain tumour! Of course I was then diagnosed with BC and did not have the cover!! It is so wrong, we have enough to deal with without worrying about financial issues!!
Beast Wishes to you all Donna xx
…sorry I don’t have helpful experience but know that my diagnosis has involved extra expense!!! I’ve been told that MacMillan are helpful re advice and, do you have a Maggie’s Centre near you? They were v helpful when the son of one of our friends had testicular cancer. B
ps Don’t think David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ was desgned for us or aren’t I allowed to put political comments here?
I saw a financial advisor last year who arranged a mortgage for me. He advised my OH to take out critical illness/life insurance as we’re self employed in our own business, and he told me I would be able to get critical illness and life insurance after my 5 years remission was up, just to go back and see him about it when the time came.
Our own bank wouldn’t give us a mortgage as they wanted 2 years accounts and we’d only been trading for 2 at that point. The financial advisor got us 3 offers from other banks and the fact I was in remission from breast cancer was not viewed as a problem by any of them.
