Downgraded referral to breast clinic

Good afternoon all,

Looking for some advice/somewhere to vent! Before Christmas I found a small lump in the upper quadrant of my left breast. The lump feels approximately 1-1.5cm I attended the GP on 13th January after I was certain that the lump hadn’t changed following almost period. The GP felt the lump and stated he would send an urgent referral for me to be seen in the breast clinic.

On the 19th January I received a letter to say I was on the waiting list. Today I called just to find out the expected wait time to be told a consultant (who has never spoken to me or met me) has downgraded the referral to non urgent and I can expect to be seen in 18months! Shocked and upset is an understatement.

I called my GP immediately who is gobsmacked that this has been done and has sent another urgent referral today asking that I be seen. I guess my worry is what if this is downgraded again? I am 34 and GP says this is the only reason he can see that it’s been downgraded. Any one been in a similar position?

Thanks in advance xx

Hi Amyc…that doesn’t sound right to me at all…I’m.not surprised you are very worried …maybe contact the PALS  team tomorrow at the hospital you were referred to ( Google the number or ring the hospital switchboard and ask to be put through) … you could also contact the hospital trusts Health Watch champion for support…but I would try pals first…have a look at NICE guidance 'recognition and referral for suspected cancer: breast cancer…there’s a protocol in there for urgent referral …hope you get some answers quick
