Drained cyst now refilled with blood from brusing!

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know about my experience and also would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced anything similar? Unfortunately I have always suffered with breast cysts, some small, some larger. I am 47 and even in my 20’s my boobs always felt lumpy, being worse before periods. I have now had 3 cysts examined, aspirated and immediately followed by a mammogram, the 2 previous ones being fine. The third one was done last Friday, and all seemed fine until the mammogram which is painfull enough at the best of times but after having had needle drain fluid, hurts a bit more! So there we are waiting for the results when they call me back in to re do the side ones again as the originals were unclear. ‘You are having a laugh’ I said silently but they had to squash me in even harder and closer than before which took my breath away. By this time I had some impressive bruising started, nothing unusual as normally end up with slight blue bruising. By the time I got home I took one look at my boob and couldn’t believe the colour of it. I looked like I had been in a car wreck and the whole left side where I had been drained was purple and very dark red. I looked like a giant ribena berry. I kept an eye on it but the next day spoke to a nurse on the NHS direct hot line as I was worried about internal bleeding but she seemed to think from my description, the wound had bled under the surface of the skin, hence the colour. Anyway, this week I had a letter from the hospital asking me to go for an ultra sound scan as the mammogram results were unclear - oh deep joy!!! When I had the scan done today it tunrs out that there is a huge dark mass under the bruising and it looks like the cyst has now actually filled with blood as the lump is bigger than when I started. I also have a few small cysts dotted about in each breast but was always aware I had some. The doctor who took the scan reckoned that maybe the fine needle hit a small vein or something causing the bleeding then with the intense pressure of 2 mammograms it just bled heavy, refilling the cyst with blood, then telling me it can be quite dangerous. Dangerous how??? I start with a normal cyst and now have one full of blood. He told me I would probably be having a few visits to the hospital for scans so they can monitor it as they are hoping it will settle down. The bruising on the outside is now starting to yellow up but the main area is still very deep purple and I think it will take a few weeks to go down. I have never been unduly worried about my cysts before as it is something I have learned to just accept, but now feeling a little unsure of what is going on inside there. I would love to know if anyone has gone through a similar thing to maybe put my mind at rest, or is it something I should be worried about?

Any feed back would be great, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi Pink Pony, I hope your breast has settled down now, I’d be interested to hear how you’re getting on. I was just doing a little research myself as today I had 2 cysts drained. Like you I’ve suffered with cysts for a long time. My doctor hit an artery whilst draining my 2nd cyst and it immediately re-filled with blood. He drained it again and the nurse put a lot of pressure on it to try and stop the bleed. I hope it’s stopped I won’t know I guess for a few days. Not looking forward to the bruising. Anyway hope you’re feeling better. joeybean x

Hi joeybean

Thanks for telling me about your experiences. It’s nice to hear from other people going through the same thing. My bruising has finally settled down but took about 3 weeks but I do still have the lump, but I think it may have gone down slightly in size. Still not heard anything back from the hospital which I am quite surprised about, but I think they were hoping the blood would disperse itself given time, but will make sure I contact them if it doesn’t and I don’t hear from them. I hope you didn’t get too much bruising after all of that. Take care x
