Drains

I’m having a therapeutic mammoplasty next week and had my pre-op appointment yesterday.  I have tumours in both breasts and the BCN has told me I will need 2 to 4 drains.  She then showed me the type they use and they are huge!  How do you carry them around? I’ve been told I may still have them in when I go home 24/48 hours after surgery and I’m wondering how others have managed in this situation.  Do they hurt where they enter the wound?  Any advice welcome. Thank you.

They don’t hurt but they’re a bit uncomfortable. You are aware of the (especially if the dog shoves her head through the thing!)

They should give you little shoulder bags to put them in made by the shreddies knitting nanny’s I think. I had two after my last surgery and it was manageable. Bed can be a bit awkward cos you need to stand them on the floor next to the bed but the tubing is long enough to do this easily even if one lot has to go across your body.

It sounds worse than the reality. It’ll be fine.

Hi cdc

I agree with Sally, the drains don’t hurt but you need to make sure you don’t catch them on things. I bought some bags from “Drain Dollies”, great price and excellent service. I had mine removed before I left hospital but it varies from person to person.

Everyone worries which is why this forum is so great for chatting and getting answers or reassurance. I’m very happy to answer any more questions you might have.

Sending you hugs and strength for next week.

I came home with a drain each side after TM on Tuesday. I was given shoulder bags to put them in. The District Nurse came and checked them each day but there was very little output so the were removed today (Friday). I was aware they were there but the didn’t hurt. Feel much better since they have gone though. More mobile!
