DVLA decision sorry misled some of you

just an update on my driving request
i phoned the dvla and they sent a form but from what i told them he said it was ok to drive
i didnt and decided to wait for confirmation
after a while had passed phoned again he looked me up on his computer said my onc had been informed and if he said it was ok i could drive
my doctor and onc had both said they were fine with me driving
but lo and behold what arrived this morning but a letter from the dvla saying
i am sorry to tell you that our medical advisor has recommended that you should not drive
please return your licence

i was so fed up as i had been so looking forward to getting my independence back
my son is having his bedroom done out and we were going to look for flooring beds etc never mind christmas shopping now it means i am dependent on my hubby all the time for lifts
oh well ive had my bit moan for today

Moan away! You are entitled.

Is there any kind of appeal process?

Well, i would check this one out, got to be a load of tosh, when you had breast cancer i take it the surgeon did leave you with your arms and legs, and eyes, I’ve never heard anything like it!! I am back driving for a living, i could have had my old job back which involved driving 2000 miles a month, my medical team etc had no problems with that. I reckon some one has got it wrong some where down the line??? can’t wait to see what other people on the site have to say on this one. Best of luck to you. x

So sorry to read this, Northerngirl. I would discuss it with your onc and see if there is any way you can appeal. I don’t see why an informed report from your onc should outweigh their medical advisors overly cautious opinion. I definitely think you should pursue the matter further, and best of luck with it!

Sorry - seem to be having mental block on this one. Do you have brain mets as I thought that was the only cancer related reason why you couldn’t drive?I informed the DVLA when I was first diagnosed and they said it was only if I had brain mets they needed to klnow.
Good luck with appelaing
Kate

This is outrageous - appeal and pursue this in every possible way. Good Luck

SORRY everyone because ive been on here so often even if its just to read the posts
it feels personal and i assume people know all my details !!!
i had secondary bc in the brain and had a tumour removed july 2006
they said i can reapply after 2 years which will be next summer
sorry for the confusion

Hi northergirl, you must be at the end of your thether! You have tried so hard, but keep trying, its worth it. Maybe you could go and see the person who wrote the letter and refuse to leave his office until he explains himself
Take care Northerngirl.
Regards

Suzy (in Aust,) ps. my baby brain tumor has decided it wants to grow up. looking into more surgery of some sort?.

So sorry to hear this. This link takes you to the DVLA’s guidance for the medical profession. I think page 8 onwards must be the relevant section and then it’s a case of trying to identify where you fit into the table.

Discuss with your onc?

Good luck

Margaret

Everyone was giving me mixed messages about driving, some said they did not think any form of brain tumour was allowed to drive.

Onc said he was told anyone who had brain tumour, surgery or shunt unable to drive.

So i rang DVLA who said they would send forms for me to fill in to make their decision, most of the form was about brain surgery, fits etc. I have sent it back and I am awaiting news, but I have been told it is unlikely I will be allowed to drive.

After 2 / 3 years you can apply for a review but no guarantees.

If you do not let insurance company & DVLA know they say you are liable for any accident you may have regardless as to whether it is your fault or not.
