I have just read Tessa Cunninghams story of her breast cancer journey in the Daily Mail today 16/11/17. Must read. The headline says " people say I’m ‘lucky’ to have survived cancer - and I am. But they dont want to hear about the emotional scars that haunt you" this is so true. Now all the ops have been done and I look normal, noone wants to hear how I feel emotionally. Noone wants to hear me “going on about it”
Thanks for pointing that article out, gilleyb.
It was an interesting read.
The author has clearly not got over the trauma even after 10 years, which indicates how horrible the treatment is.
People who have never had cancer, or who have no close family member who has, don’t have a clue.
My friends have said things like “the treatment is so good these days” “it is tailor made for the patient now”.
I found it more a case of “let’s try this and see what happens”.
I read my diary the other day and it says things like “spent 4 days in bed” “ancles swollen” “nausea bad” “dizzy”.
In defence of the friends who try to say the right thing but fail badly, they are scared of getting cancer themselves and don’t have a clue how many sorts of cancer there are.
No your right no one wants to know. Once you’ve had your op and you look ok it’s hard for anyone to understand what you’ve really been through. I’m suffering more now emotionally after having chemo …a mastectomy and awaiting radiotherapy. Its an awful time. Your not alone.
