Excision for Chronic Seroma

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to find (no luck yet) someone who has had chronic seroma after their mastectomy. I had it drained every week for four weeks, then when told it was possible to get an infection I left it for about four/five months, but it was like a brick so back I went and they drained it and did an ultrasound. As it showed some fatty substances and scarring I was sent back to the Breast Surgeon who recommended an operation where they close the dead space to stop the seroma happening. I think you are stitched to the chest wall or something. Anyway, just wanting to compare notes really but cannot find anyone who has had this done, it cannot be that rare surely?

 I messaged a friend of mine who had this issue, her surgeon removed the entire pocket rather than stitching to chest wall, she had a little seroma come back but that all cleared. I don’t know if this will help you with any choices or decisions or discussions you can still have but just wanted to share my friends experience because she had same procedure as you. I had a therapeutic mammo pasty do I couldn’t help but I hope what my friend has advised makes sense to you if you’ve not been given that as an option. Sending :two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

Hello Shi,
Thank you so much for your reply, you are the first person I have heard of having this done, although what your friend had done sounds better than what I had done to be honest, don’t know if I have that option open any more and they can unstitch if you know what I mean. Anyway, thank you so much I am so grateful for that reply. I hope you are o.k. Take Care Minnie

Worth asking about, this happened after her mastectomy because her seroma kept coming back even after it was drained a few times, which was why I asked her so you could maybe ask if it’s an option for you  sending :two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

Hi @minnie4
Sorry to hear of your predicament, it must be awful for you.
Reading your post reminded me of a conversation i had with my consultant. I went in for a double mastectomy with expanders reconstruction. He said to me to make sure i ate enough good quality protein including red meat to reduce risk of seroma.
Maybe this is something that could help you get through your situation.
Wish you well xxx

Hello Shi,
Actually I just wrote to one of the breast nurses and asked her about this, she is very good and may have the answer, although, they never like to go over the head of the Surgeon and I really don’t want to see him again. You are so kind to write about this, most people don’t have a clue what I am talking about and if you google they just bang on about draining, so frustrating. I even thought of paying to see another breast surgeon and asking him, but thought I would do some research first. Thanks again, I hope you are doing well. I live all your artwork at the end of your post, I have enough trouble writing. Stay safe. xxx. Minnie

Hello Ahbc,
Thank you so much for replying, (I am going to have to look up expanders reconstruction) you learn so much on this website. I have not heard that before and it is unusual that a consultant is into nutrition, I hope it worked for you. I tried everything they said, exercise, warm water bottles, massage and more massage, so in the end another general anesthetic and the stitch up, literally. Just had cataracts removed this year so Mastectomy in 23 the stitch up in 24 and eyes in 25 wonder what I can do for 2026? Evidently some chemo (mine) can cause certain type of cataracts (also mine). But, still here and for anyone who has metastatic cancer out there, I was talking to a lady who had bowel and liver cancer over twenty years ago when she was in her fifties, she is now 75 and fit and healthy, hooray for her and all of us. Thank you again, so kind of you to take the time, and I hope you are fit and well and stay that way. xxx Minnie
