exemastane

Hi there,
I have been taking exemastane since may 2008 i was at that time diagnosied with secondary breast cancer to bones…i am stable since that time t.g. just would like to know if anyone else has been on this med long term over 3 or 5 years and also do you still have some side effects? thanks v much xx

Hi Chrystal

It’s great to hear that you’ve had such good results with exemestane (when I took it, it was branded Aromasin: the name sounded like a perfume I thought  )

Unfortunately it only gave me about 8 months (I also have liver mets and am now stable on capecitabine). But there is someone on here who has had good results with exemestane: hopefully she will see this post.

In 2009 I was on the SoFEA trial, which compares Faslodex (fulvestrant) as trial drug, with exemestane as standard treatment. The trial hasn’t published its results yet.

Hi Chrystal

So glad to hear that exemestane is keeping your bone mets stable - I’ve been on it for over 6 years, after taking Arimidex for two years when I was dx with liver & bone mets in 2003. I’ve also been on a tablet bisphosphonate (ibandronic acid) and a tablet chemotherapy (capecitabine), so it’s difficult to say whether I’m having any side effects from the exemestane - don’t think so. I’m 61, and had a very early menopause in my 40s, but had plenty of hot flushes during/after CMF chemo in 1997 and on tamoxifen & arimidex. Think I’m probably just all past that now - can finally wear woolly jumpers again!

We are all pretty much “guinea pigs”, or pioneers (to give it more positive spin), when we stay on these treatments for many years - it’s interesting to collect others’ experiences, as no one else seems to be doing this for/with us.

Take care, and hope you stay stable for many more years! xx

Hi Chrystal,

I have just started Exemestane - been on it for 6 weeks now, so I was really encouraged to read your post! I have bone mets & did have a tiny amount of fluid in my left pleura which was not detectable on my last scan in November, after a course of Taxol.

I have just had another scan this week to see if the Exemestane is continuing to hold things steady. Results next week, so I am hoping & praying it is doing a good job for me too.
