Exemestane and smear test

I have been on Exemestane for 4 months and had a smear last week.

Horrendous - it’s never been so bad. I had cramps for a day afterwards as well. Hopefully it will be my last one.

Anyone else noticed the test has got painful since they started on AI’s?

Hi Willowherb,

If/when you book to have a future smear test tell them about your experience re tightening/pain and your meds and ask them if they can get the smallest size of speculum. That way it won’t be painful.

I found after quite a few years on Tamoxifen it made it slightly more uncomfortable so discussed it with the nurse at my GP surgery and that was the approach we took which made it all ok.

Hoping this info may be helpful to other forum members.

I have just been for my first smear test since being on Tamoxifen and probably also first post menopause. They couldn’t do it as it hurt too much and advised asking GP to prescribe estrogen cream which I would need to use for 3 months before trying again. First I have to wait another month for a GP appointment to discuss. I think they were already using the small speculum.

I’ve seen on other forums Diazepam being suggested to help relax so will ask about that as an alternative…seems counter intuitive to take hormone blockers then apply hormones.
