Hi there ,
I had a mastectomy, chemo and radiation to the breast - I finished treatment about a year ago.
The area is still a bit darker and has some spots (attached photo).
Is it safe to spray tan or fake tan this area? Or should I avoid doing anything?
Also any tips to get the area lighter and get rid of spots?
Radiotherapy can cause colour change resulting in the skin looker darker than your normal skin tone in the area treated by the radiotherapy. Skin care including regularly moisturising and remembering to use high factor sun cream when out in the sun are important for keeping your skin in good condition. It may be helpful to ask your GP or treatment team to check the spots to determine if there is a specific local application they would suggest. We are not aware of any products that are recommended to lighten the skin in your situation.
Spray tan is not recommended during radiotherapy treatment or immediately after while the skin is more sensitive. Tanning products may be used again if any skin reactions have subsided and there are no open wounds. It is also a good idea to do a patch test first to ensure you don’t experience any allergic reactions. We would suggest you contact the radiotherapy unit where you had your treatment to check what they recommend.
