Was recently diagnosed with HER2+, hormone negative breast cancer. Saw the specialist at the Mayo Clinic yesterday. Because my tumor is very small I expect to have a lumpectomy in early Aug, followed by chemo, radiation and Herceptin for a year. My lymph nodes were clear on ultrasound so I was put at Stage 1. I was feeling pretty okay with everything. Then today I found out my breast MRI showed a nodule on my thyroid. I guess thyroid nodules are pretty common and rarely cancerous but now I’m back to spiraling sooooo bad. The physical stuff I hope I can handle but this roller coaster is mentally and emotionally exhausting.
Welcome to the forum @parksgirl60
I’m so sorry that you find yourself here, but glad that you’ve reached out. I’m sorry that you’re going through this, many here will be able to relate to the emotional roller coaster you mention.
The forum is full of very kind people with lots of different experiences of breast cancer, and I hope you find it a supportive place.
Please know that our nurses are also here to support you - with clinical questions or for a chat. You can get in touch with them here on the forum on the Ask our Nurses your questions board or on our helpline 0808 800 6000 which is open Monday to Friday 9am-4pm and 9am-1pm Saturday.
We’re thinking of you,

Hay there,
Just read your post and I thought you might be interested to know that I too have had a thyroid anomaly flagged up.
Mine showed up on an unrelated blood test and they have queried ‘subclininal hyperthyroidism’ - my urate levels were curiously high too.
However, following my BC diagnosis shortly afterwards, my GP said it’s not uncommon and isn’t necessarily ‘bad on top of bad’
The way she explained it to me is that the bigger picture with all of this is the bodies abnormal cell growth effects other things too and sometimes our bodies struggle to offload the overproduction and it can get stuck and present as gout (urate high) and effect other glands that are trying to process all this stuff (ie your thyroid).
Sorry if that’s a bit random, but I guess I just wanted to say ‘yes, it’s just another thing to add to the list of stressors right now’ But, it isn’t necessarily thyroid cancer. And if it is- you be looked after by amazing people who will give you 110%
Let the boffins do their thing and get it looked at. Chances are it’ll be something they look at and monitor while they tackle your BC treatments first. My gp said she’ll order a neck scan but they will wait and just monitor my levels. See if things settle out in the coming months…
It’s a scary ride- we all understand that. I likened it to being hit by a freight train! But knowing that you are diagnosed and what they can do for you is a huge positive step. You are on the path. Get your treatment and move forward proactively.
You’ll have bad days. We all do- go with it. The BCNs are fantastic and can help with so much more than treatment plans. Tell them if you are struggling- they are there to help and support you- use them.
Be kind to yourself. Accept help when it’s offered and grab support when you need it. This is a good place to talk stuff out.
All the best to you.
Look after yourself…
My experience is that they always flag anything even vaguely abnormal on scans once you’ve have had a breast cancer diagnosis . I’ve had several “ suspicion of metastases” comments on the reports after scans but so far none have turned out to be that
Fingers crossed you are given re-assuring news soon.x
That does seem to be the case Jill. At least you know they are keeping a good eye on everything.
I’m just starting out with all this but I’m now 7 days post op. Dressings off today. Bruised but on the mend.
Fingers crossed for us all
Misswoof-88 and Jill1998, thank you so much for your kind responses—it helps a lot. I called today and was able to move my ultrasound to tomorrow—so at least I won’t have to wait two more weeks. Hope you’re both doing well.
That’s great news. One more thing to tick off the list before the BC appointments come thick & fast
You’ve got this
There’s always support on here- for whatever youre concerned about or if you’re just feeling crap! We are all in the same boat (in one way or another)…
All the best
Xx
