Fibroadenoma worry

I am 55 and had lumpectomy in April 2023 followed by 5 sessions of radiotherapy. At my annual check up last year, they suspected I had a fibroadenoma. No test were done apart from mammogram which came back clear. I have just had my 2nd annual follow up and as the suspected fibroadenoma is more obvious and changed shape, I need an ultrasound, but been told it could be up to 10 weeks wait. I had my annual mammogram which again came back clear, but letter confirms ultrasound booked.
Do fibroadenomas show up on mammogram ? I am a bit on edge as to why if mammogram was clear why I still need ultrasound. I have been reading other posts about fibroadenoma where discussed that they will also biopsy if you are a bit older. Will this be definate.
Back to worrying game

Hi there. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve such a long wait for your ultrasound. 10 weeks is long, but it does mean they don’t suspect cancer or they’d have put you on the 2 week pathway. I had a fibroadenoma in my 20s that was biopsied and scanned on 2 week pathway. In my late 40s, i found a lump in the other side and they checked both sides. The ultrasound was able to see that the fibroadenoma was still there 20 years on and the new lump was different. She could see that the new lump was spiculated whereas the fibroadenoma was smooth. I’m guessing they want to check yours but aren’t too concerned as they’d have rushed. However 10 weeks is ages to wait. You could ring up and ask for a cancellation or go to your gp and ask to go on the 2 week pathway. I hope all is fine and please keep us posted. X

Hi, thanks for this. I completely agree that the ultrasound would be quicker if they had a concern. Its this thought that is keeping me slightly more positive. I should have said it is more a long, wide thickening with a dent in the middle , than a lump.
Hope you are doing well x

Hi poorlyboob

Thank you for posting. It is understandable to worry when you are told that you need further investigations after an annual follow up mammogram and it is natural to be concerned about waiting for 10 weeks for your appointment.

A fibroadenoma is a very common benign condition that does not usually need any treatment. They can usually be seen on a mammogram. It is likely that the ultrasound has been requested because your fibroadenoma has changed shape since it was first seen. The radiologist will decide if a biopsy is required once the ultrasound has been completed.

If you still have a breast care nurse it may help to contact them to explain your concerns and ask about the reasons for the appointment, as @bluesatsuma suggests. They will be able to explain the reasons for the ultrasound and the waiting times for the appointment.
