Also late to the chat, but this was so relatable. In May this year, I was full of energy after realising that I have a weird and unusual wheat allergy. I felt so hopeful about the future and all the things I would finally have the energy to do with what I thought was a fully healthy body. So just as I was finally about to hit the gas, I went straight into a brick wall called cancer.
At the beginning of June, I went to my doctor about a lump, and then everything descended into chaos. Since then, I have been diagnosed with two separate breast cancers (the left one is HER2-positive and the right one is stage 3, ER-positive) and found out that I have a BRCA2 mutation. My treatment plan involves chemo, Phesgo for the HER2-positive cancer, a double mastectomy and axillary lymph node removal, radiotherapy, and Zoladex + letrozole (or similar) for five years, followed by pills for another five years. Probably also a CDK4/6 inhibitor and/or Kadcyla, depending on the pathology results. Later, I will also need to have my ovaries removed.
While it is difficult not to find many people in the same situation cancer-wise, I find it even harder to feel so alone when it comes to age and social situation. I am 39, single, and don’t have children. I have also always felt “what will be, will be” about having children, but I always thought it would be within my control to some extent. Luckily, I was offered the chance to freeze eggs before starting chemo, but I still haven’t decided what I want, and I feel like the clock is ticking.
Suddenly, my future feels hijacked by cancer. I was not expecting to have to build my future, date, and have sex without breasts, without estrogen, and with the constant threat of recurrence. I’ve been given every brochure they have about sex and relationships after cancer, and they all make me furious. I’m currently on chemo and the rest is still to come, so there is a lot of uncertainty about how I will be affected in the long run.
Sorry if this is a bit of a negative (and long) post. I just wanted to say thank you for this thread, which popped up just when I needed it most. It made me feel a lot less alone!
