Fingernail problems

I finished chemo in October, had surgery in November and radiotherapy in February/March. Just recently my fingernails have become really bad - flaking into layers and receding backwards. I’ve never had good nails due to biting them as a child but nothing like this. They are flaking back to the skin and my fingers are sore. Anyone else had this?

Hi yes i have this. I finished chemo at the end of July last year, then surgery and radiotherapy, but its only in the last few months that my nails have got so bad. They are breaking, splitting and flaking, so i have to keep filing them down. Fortunately not sore. Ive tried Sally Hanson nail strengthener and have gone back to using the cuticle oil i had when on chemo, but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference. Sorry not to be of help. Hopefully, someone out there might have some advice. I

My nails were the same after treatment, flaky and sore. I found moisturizing regularly and taking biotin helped. Maybe try wearing soft gloves at night to protect them too.

Thank you for replying. I’m sorry you’ve got the same problem too. If I find out anything helpful I’ll post it on this thread.
I hope you are doing well otherwise x

Thank you for the advice. I’ll definitely give it a go.
I hope you’re doing well.

Hello @lydi09 and @pennyp
Ive just had a look online and a lot of sites recommended a product called polybalm but it’s £50! Xx

Hi ladies i used hard as hoof nail strengthening cream. It was after chemotherapy and radiotherapy finished in December my nails were horrible. Fingers and toes some looked bruised and others fell off altogether but other nail’s growing underneath. My fingers nails have come back well. Toes are getting there. X

3 years on after chemo, radiotherapy, abemaciclib and on exemestane for another 7 years. My finger nails are still in poor condition, flake and break easily. I use a teatree cuticle oil most days and always wear a clear top coat to provide strength. If I dont have anything on they just break. No problem with my toenails, which I find weird. My daughter gave me a voucher for a gel manicure which has been a real treat.

@jayesse - my nails are awful too. I had BIAB nails cos they were driving me mad-was a bit worried about having them but they helped my natural nails recover. I’ve had a few months without nails now but they r brittle again so just had BIABs again! Hope this helps x
