Finishing Zoladex and Periods

I was on zoladex for 4 years which I know is slightly longer than most people. However, I was wondering about other women’s experiences of periods after finishing treatment

At 43 years old, (39 when I started treatment), I didn’t really consider myself near menopausal so I was expecting my periods to return to normal. I did have one which occurred about 8 weeks after my last injection but that was about 6 weeks ago and although I have had some pinkish discharge since, I haven’t had another period.

I know it sounds silly but I was elated about having that period. It was symbolic of my return to normality. I can’t really explain it but I feel deflated, disappointed and depressed now.

hi crawfo64 i understand your feelings. I was on zoladex for two years finished november 2007. my period returned mid january and also had a period around 5 weeks later in february and then nothing until the other week ! Like you I felt having my period returning was a symbol of normality and when it didnt return for almost 2 months there i was deflated also but as i say it came back the other week, obviously it is going to take a while for things to return to normal. Never thought I would have saw the day that I would look forward to having a period !!!

Hi CRAWFO64

I am 45, 43 at diagnosis.

I had just one injection, which lasted for 3 months and finished in October last year, then decided not to continue as I couldn’t stand the side effects. I had to wait till April until I had a period, but was really pleased when it happened, felt like getting back to normal, which is what I want more than anything.

Am due another one but it has shown no signs, and am still having mild flushes, it feels like my hormones haven’t quite made up their minds yet.

Its good to know that its not only me, and I am sure given time they will settle again.

Best wishes to you both

My period finally started yesterday. My emotions are all over the place. I’m elated because I’m ‘back to normal’, but I’m also fed up, especially during this hot weather when I’m all sticky and uncomfortable. How could I possibly want this back for the next 10 or so years and then have to go through menopause all over again. I must be mad. Yet somehow, it is a good to be just like every other women again, I can join in all the PMT conversations with my friends.

By the way Deborah, I thought the three monthly injection wasn’t licenced for breast cancer? If it has been prescribed for that reason, you need to go back and discuss it with your doctor. As far as I’m aware, and someone correct me if I’m wrong, Zoladex is only given as a monthly injection for breast cancer.

Best Wishes
Sharon

Hi Crawfo64

Really pleased to hear you got your period again. It may take a little more time for your body to sort itself out. I had Zoladex injections during the time I was on chemo and my last chemo was end of October. I got my first period about 3 weeks ago and when I told the oncologist, he said it was a good sign (I have a scan with a fertility specialist in July). However, I was also told that the periods could be erratic and may take a while to settle down.

Best wishes

Hi Sharon

There seems to be a bit of a debate about the 3 monthly injection, but thats what I was prescribed. I am no longer having it anyway, but I think it depends on who is prescribing it, everyone seems to have a different opinion.

Glad you are getting back to normal, hope I don’t have to wait too long for mine to settle.

Best wishes to you all.
