First appointment next week

Hi everyone

I have my first appointment next Wedsnesday and I wonder if anyone can tell me what to expect (typically) at this appointment?  Apparently where I’m going is a “one stop shop”, but the appointments lady couldn’t tell me if I would be given a mammogram or not?

Thanks x

Hi  NJA73,

Sorry you have to be here, so hope we can help and support you.

First of all, you will meet a nurse practioner. She will ask you some general health questions then give you a manual examination. You will then most likely have a mammogram, and then an ultra sound.  If necessary (depending on what they see on the US, they will do a biopsy. This is not painful as they will give you a local anaesthetic first.

I assume that as you are going to a one stop clinic, they will give you an idea as to whether you are likely to have breast cancer or not. I didn’t go to a one stop clinic, and had to wait one week for my results. They might want to see you a week or two later, to go into more detail about what they found. If it is breast cancer, they will then discuss a treatment plan for you.

You will find that waiting is the hardest part, so try to fill your time  doing things you enjoy: going to the cinema/theatre, country walks, visiting friends and relatives etc. One word of warning, please do not Google, as you will find out of date info or even wrong info!!  Stick to this site or the Macmillan site for information and advice. Visit these forums often and ask questions, rant, have a moan, that’s what we are here for.

Sending you big hugs and best wishes and hoping for a good outcome for you.

Hi, I saw a nurse who had a good feel around, then had a mammogram followed by an ultrasound and biopsy. I was there about 4 hours. Make sure you take someone with you, I went alone but they old me then that they were pretty sure it was cancer and had to ring a friend to come and get me because I was so shocked! Good luck xx

Hi again, here is a  link that takes you to a downloadable file that explains all about your appointment. Hope it helps.

Hi,

I have to say I totally agree that you should have someone there once the tests are done.

I had all the usual - mammogram, ultrasound and biposy, and to be honest I wasn’t expecting anything to be found.

I then saw the consultant who said he was pretty sure it was bad news. If  it hadn’t been for the BCN who virtually picked me up off the floor I don’t think I could have coped. I then has to wait another week for biopsy results.

I really feel looking back it would have been better for me to have someone, I know we all like to think there is nothing wrong, and I will be hoping your news is good news, but just in case try and have someone with you.

To be honest the waiting is the pits!! Last week was the longest week of my life, and your mind runs away with all sorts of ideas. Follow  the advice on here from all the other ladies and donlt start looking at things online. Try and keep busy and just take things easy. Easier said then done I know, but once you know either way you will feel much better knowing the outcome.

I wish you well and hope things work out well, come back and let us know how it goes.
