Hi - I was referred to a specialist from my GP and the specialist has now referred me for a mamogram and a scan. Could anyone tell me how long I will wait before these appointments and what the scan actually entails? Many thanks
Dont know how long the appointment will take, because it is more normal for GP’s to send you to a breast clinic where the specialist has scans on site and they can be done the same day. Perhaps someone else will be able to help with that.
The scan is much more pleasant than a mammogram, they put some gel on and run a hand held gadget over your breast, they dont even have to press that hard and the picture comes up on the screen. I dont like mammograms because of being pressed between the plates, but the scan is a walk in the park, nothing to it.
Many thanks for that - I have been told by the hospital that the appointment could take up to 6 weeks.
i’m in north east and doc told me i’d have an appointment within 2 weeks, it took 4 as hospital messed it up! i’d also agree scan is better than mammogram. I have big boobs and having them squashed was very uncomfortable. they took 6 shots in total on mammogram. But apparently appointments are supposed to be within 2 weeks i was told by doc x
Thank you for your reply - I’m a little suprised at waiting up to 6 weeks but am staying positive
Im very surprised your appointment could take up to 6 weeks!. To be honest if i was you i’d go back and see a different doc at the practice for a second opinion and ask if 6 weeks is a normal timeframe for appointments for something like this. Everywhere i’ve read it’s said 2 weeks. Maybe someone else can comment with some advice. Im at the stage of waiting for core biopsy results so know just how your feeling with all the waiting and it’s the worst time. big cuddles to you xxx
Thank you so much for your support - thinking of you too! I saw the main consultant at the hospital, I have called them again to check and they say the same - maximum wait 6 weeks. x
How long for core biopsy results?
hi there, i live in the south west and was told that government guidelines now say that you shpold wait no more than six weeks for a routine referal and no more than 2 weeks for an urgent referal, so it may be encouraging for u to know your gp doesn’t think it urgent? If your hospital has a one stop shop for breast care you should get the whole mammogram, scan and biopsy thing over and done with in one go. The mammogram is a bit weird, not painful, bit uncomfortable and undignified but ok, scan is nothing to worry about. I then had a core biopsy as they found 2 cancers which hurt a bit when they put in the anaesthetic and sore after, results take about a week. The waiting is the worst - i’m waiting now and it’s exhausting and emotional. Sending you good wishes for a good outcome x
Hi MJB, you’ll find everywhere is different.
I stressed myself initially when I surfed this site because it became apparent that most others had much faster referrals etc. But now that treatment has begun, I can honestly say it does not matter as much as I thought it would.
My GP did not put me through as urgent and my appt came back for over 8 weeks later (when i was on holiday!) then i had another two week wait.
At breast clinic i waited a couple of weeks for biopsy appt. It’s not too bad at all. You are given plenty local anaesthetic, but the bruising can be spectacular! Results were a week later, but you’ll see that everyone is different.
I stressed because I waited 3 weeks for surgery, then stressed because I waited 6 weeks for radiotherapy. What a waste of energy lol! I missed out on a whole Summer because I was scared I’d ‘miss’ an appt letter. You live and learn.
So take care and try not to be like I was!
Carolyn xx
