Hi Ladies - i’d really appreciate if you can keep me right on a few things. I’m due my first mammo mid Feb, it’ll be approx 2 weeks after surgery to change to a permanent implant, my questions are
What type of checks are done at the first mammo?
Is there anything done (at the mammo ) with the reconstructed breast? if so - will it matter that its surgery is so recent ie stitches etc.
Any info on what to expect will be much appreciated. Thanks
I had a WLE and full lymph node removal so I’m not quite in the same boat. I still have two breast albeit one is a bit mangled! I had my first mammogram around one year post surgery and it was the same as an ordinary one - still as ‘horrible’ as usual! I would not imagine they would be doing a mammogram on your reconstructed breast so soon after surgery but why not 'phone the helpline here for some innformation?
Hi there,
I had my first mammogram a few weeks ago after a mastectomy a year ago (still waiting for breast reconstruction). Just had a mammo on the good side, bcn afterwards did a full examination along my scar line on mastectomy side. Had a long discussion with my surgeon before Christmas about reconstruction and he told me they dont do mammograms on reconstructions or implants etc, just a manual examination as this was one of my questions…so I think the answer will be they will leave well alone and do a manual check. Hope this makes sense. You could always ring your bcn and chat it through with them,
xx
following a mastectomy they remove the breast tissue so they dont do mammos on mastectomies or reconstructed breasts… they will do a clinical breast exam annually to both sides. if you notice any changes however they will do a more thorough investigation to rule out a recurrence.
i only had a WLE to each side so far so still have annual mammo to both side and annual MRI as im a brca 2 carrier but after i have bilateral mx then i would no longer have mammos or MRI annually.
