First mammogram after treatment DCIS

Hi. I had 2 surgeries in july and aug for high grade DCIS and 5 days of radiotherapy.

I now have the next mammogram a year from last one but issue is im still sore inside breast lumpy too. The thought of a mammogram like this builds dread into already ferling anxious it being first one since treatment.

Could a scan or something else be done instead or is it just the mammogram .thanks

That seems quite early for a post op mammogram. Mine falls just after the first anniversary of my surgery which I was told was procedure here.

I think it would be worth discussing with your breast nurse. I finished radiotherapy in September and now have some swelling and fibrosis so I’m going to tell them in advance and see what they suggest.

Thanks for your reply . Yes I expected it later. Think ill give nurses a call. Im still too sore to even think about getting them put in the mammogram machine . I finished my radiotherapy in October so its only really 6 months .

@circleoflife Dont panic, it’s most likely an admin error, your first mammogram is usually a year after your surgery x

We had our surgery and radiotherapy around the same time last year. I havent had a call up for the first year check up as yet. Seems like theyre a bit early or is it due from anniversary of diagnosis I wonder? I was dx in May so presuming check up could be anytime after that. I’d definitely give your bcn a call especially since you are still uncomfortable. Xx

Hi thanks for both your replies. Yes I will give nurses a call. Looks like they have scheduled it one year after the mammogram i was recalled for rather than a year from surgery . Will let you know what the say.

Thanks again ladies.

Hi circleoflife

Thanks for posting

As it’s around 6 months since your last surgery and your breast still feels sore and lumpy it’s understandable that you are anxious about having a mammogram at this time.

Follow up after treatment can vary and the timing of mammograms may differ depending on the routines at your treatment hospital. People are offered an annual mammogram in keeping with current guidelines and any exception to this is considered on a case-by-case basis by your treatment team. In general other scans are not offered as an alternative to mammograms.

As others have indicated in their replies, the first follow up mammogram is often scheduled for around a year after surgery, and many people find they are able to tolerate it. Some people have told us they take pain medication such as paracetamol about half an hour before the mammogram to help with any pain during the procedure.

We would suggest you contact your breast care nurse to check why your mammogram is sooner that you expected. You can also let her know that your breast is still sore and lumpy and that the thought of a mammogram at this time is making you very anxious.

Stress and anxiety are very common especially as follow up checks get closer and there are lots of ways to help manage this . Here are some other hints and tips for you to try to see which works best for you while you wait for more information about your mammogram.
