First mammogram after treatment

I received an appointment today for my first mammogram after treatment. I will then have an appointment with the consultant a few weeks after for the results.

i finished treatment in September for stage 2, grade 2 BC, ER+8, HER2-, tumour was 21mm and I had 2 positive lymph nodes with sentinel node biopsy. Following lumpectomy and chemo I had a lymph node clearance. The remaining 20 lymph nodes removed were all clear. I then had 19 sessions of radiotherapy. I’m now on Tamoxifen and Zoladex.

The appointment letter I received today said there may be a need for a further appointment for ultrasound before the consultant appointment. I think I would be very anxious if this was the case even though I understand this will be my baseline mammogram and I obviously have scar tissue from surgery and rads.

i just wondered what others experience of their first mammogram and results were? Did anyone have to go for ultrasound? Were there any issues or were you given no evidence of disease at consultant appointments?

Hi Elaine, I’m coming up to my third year post diagnosis mammogram in March and on my previous two I’ve just had a physical checkup with the surgeon then a mammogram, results were sent through the post. They did say that the images are looked at the same day, it just takes time for them to be double checked written up and posted off so maybe if they were to see anything that needed further investigation then they would call you for an ultrasound before your appointment but I would think this is just a generic letter advising you that this could happen and it’s not the norm as far as I’m aware. Xx

Reading about other people’s experience of first mammogram, it seems we all get something different. I was sent an appointment that clashed with so orthopaedic appointment at the same hospital. I was told that l wouid be out in ten minutes and if  l was quick would still be able to keep both appointments. Did point out out that l don’t move that fast hence the ortho appointment.

So  hopefully all will work out.

Isnt it strange how all those worries and fears that you have tried to contain suddenly flood out as you open the appointment letter?

Good luck to all those who are waiting for their mammogram like me.xx
