Hi, I’m new here. I’ve recently been diagnosed with Stage 2 IDC and I’m pencilled in for a left breast mastectomy on 24th September. The reason I say pencilled in is because my HER2 result is still not back (biopsies done 2.5 weeks ago) and, if positive, they’ll recommend chemo first.
I’ve read some stuff on BMJ website that suggests it might not be a good idea to have the chemo first and just to go ahead with the mastectomy. Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience? I’m so confused and just want the 24th to be here, so I can get on with the inevitable.
Thank you if you’ve taken the time to read this, I’m so sorry if you’re in a similar situation.
I cant help you with your query but wanted to acknowledge your post.
It might be worth posting your question on the Chemotherapy section within the going through treatment thread as I am sure there will be ladies who can answer your question as they have been in the same position.
Hi Chocxie, sorry you find yourself here. If there is a risk they cannot achieve clear margins then you will most likely have to have chemo first. This is the position I was in. It feels really horrible, knowing there is a cancerous growth inside you which can’t be removed and your instinct is to get it out as soon as possible. The chemo shrunk my tumour enough for it to be removed safely and I had clear margins. Try not to worry too much as your medical team will be making all of the right decisions to reduce risk for recurrence. Here is my story which I hope you find some comfort from as well as useful ideas: lifeafterlola.com Just be prepared for the idea of chemo but don’t get too hung up on it until you know for sure. Sending hugs. xxxx
Thanks Mai, that makes sense. I hadn’t considered the safe margins issue, it all seems such a middle right now. I’ve had two meetings with my Consultant and two with my BCN. They always ask if I have questions, but I never really know what to ask. I guess I need to start preparing more.
Thanks for your reply, it has helped x
I’m really sorry you have found yourself on here - but at the same time a big hug and welcome to a wonderful forum where you will find support and information and a place to share concerns and issues.
I agree with what Mai7 says - your team will be making the best decisions for you. But at the same time don’t feel afraid to ask them any questions, such as this one. It’s a good question. When you are first diagnosed everything is a blur, your head spins and you only think of the right questions when you come out of the appointment - at least that was me!!
I had chemo before my mastectomy (I was HER- and had node involvment, hence the chemo) and my team assured me that I would have the same outcome whether I had chemo first or the surgery (I really hope that is still the case). Everyone’s case is slightly different so do discuss the options with your team.
